A Reminder of where America is heading

Someone thinks there is a future where people will read history books and wants their name to be on the right side of it.
That seems a bit pie-in-sky: people in the future reading.

To paraphrase the Legal Eagle channel, “Let’s hope they listen to and obey the court ruling… I have a feeling we’re going to be saying that a lot during this administration.”

Gross. Unless we allow migrant shelters to sexually abuse kids, we won’t be as effective deporting them.

Why would the Canadian government protect illegal fentanyl labs in Canada any more than the US would protect them in America. USA is creating wild rhetoric to justify an attack on Canadian soil? Crazy but also scary.

It’s so embarrassing and it just keeps getting worse. :woman_facepalming:

The trend of people leaving the Washington Post due to Bezos exerting editorial control continues:

I would be more worried about Trump’s comment about the boundary between our two countries. Sounds like the type of rhetoric someone like Putin would use about Ukraine:

the American president “laid out a long list of grievances,” even adding that he “did not believe that the treaty that demarcates the border between the two countries was valid.” That was soon followed by another conversation in which, according to an NBC News report, the Republican’s tone turned “abusive.”

Trump: 54-40 or fight!

I don’t know if this is Trump’s problem with the border, but if it is… it would give almost the entirety of British Columbia to the United States.

Even supposing for a moment that we were actually going to take over this territory… does Trump really want to? It’s adding a ton of liberals who will vote Democrat and who favor universal healthcare. They didn’t pay into Social Security… what are we doing about that? Are their natural resources worth more than any sort of fair Social Security & Medicare policy would cost.

Be careful what you wish for.

I expect that any part of Canada that Trump annexes would be given territory rather than state status. Talking about the 51st state by Trump is just an attempt to make the idea sound more palatable to the small % of Canadians that might be supportive.

“What?? We’d never do that!! Oh, shut up, Iraq!”

The day that Trump says he heard that Canada might have WMDs hidden in downtown Toronto and Vancouver is the day I really get worried.

Aw, c’mon… you know that Oregon boundary dispute was unfairly determined. If it wasn’t for those darn Mexicans fighting a war with us, President Polk never would have signed the Oregon Treaty. We can totes take Mexico now, so we want a redo on that legally binding treaty signed (not under duress) in 1846.

No dissenting opinions allowed. Even if they are ones that shouldn’t be political, like domestic abusers with very public histories of alcohol abuse and anger issues shouldn’t own guns.

The Justice Department’s pardon attorney was dismissed a day after she refused to recommend that the actor Mel Gibson, a prominent supporter of President Trump’s, should have his gun rights restored, according to the attorney and others familiar with the situation.

Elizabeth G. Oyer, the former pardon attorney, described the sequence of events as an alarming departure from longstanding practice, one that put public safety and the department’s integrity at risk. Mr. Gibson had lost his gun rights as a result of a 2011 domestic violence misdemeanor conviction.

“This is dangerous. This isn’t political — this is a safety issue,” Ms. Oyer said in an interview with The New York Times as she described the internal discussions about whether to give gun rights back to people with domestic violence convictions.

It’s too woke to ask these questions

Even if you were pro-becoming part of the US, I struggle to see becoming the 51st state as an attractive option where all of Canada would be governed out of Ottawa with little local control. That’s a pretty huge “state”.
