The United States owes much of its wealth to the quantity and quality of basic research that is done here. Or was done here. Gutting the NSF will be devastating long term. As a percentage of total government spending, it is small, but the impact on science research and development, as well as development of native talent, is huge.
For a hot second, I thought this article was on the way to something like “DOGE employees enter NOAA with box cutters, slash employees who try to stop them” and thought “yeah that tracks with the past week”.
I heard a funny comment about Trump’s proposal to ethnically cleanse the Gaza strip.
Spoilered because it's a joke adjacent to genocide, and the topic above.
I was watching a podcast about the news. Talking about the history of the region, the podcaster put up a map that showed mandatory Palestine split into Transjordan and the mess that is between the river and the sea, and he said, “what’s shown here as Transjordan, i believe they’re known as Jordan, now, congratulations, we’re proud of her”.
President Donald Trump has revoked the security detail assigned to his former Defense Secretary Mark Esper, a person familiar with the matter confirmed Wednesday, adding to the growing list of officials who have faced retribution from their onetime boss.
Esper is one of several top aides who continued to have security after leaving office because of threats from Iran for actions they took while serving in Trump’s administration. Gen. Mark Milley, former national security adviser John Bolton and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have all had their details pulled in the first few weeks since Trump took office.
Esper’s portrait was also removed from the halls of the Pentagon last week, a move that stunned other former senior aides who worked for Trump during his first term.
I am perfectly willing to accept that the ATC system could use an update. But a small handful of 20 somethings with no experience in the area are not the people I want doing it, especially while they are simultaneously also working on other projects.
Elon Musk’s “DOGE” cost-cutting squad will soon turn its attention to America’s air traffic control system, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Wednesday in a post to Musk’s social media site X.
“Talked to the DOGE team. They are going to plug in to help upgrade our aviation system,” Duffy said.
Duffy offered no details and the Transportation Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But shortly prior to posting the missive, in a speech before a conference of state DOT officials, Duffy promised to “remake our airspace.”
Musk is notorious for abusing his workforce. I wonder which of them will break first and if the break will end in suicide, “suicide,” gulag, or escape to another country? Considering the gravity of the work I can’t see anyone letting them quit and go work at Denny’s.
