A Reminder of where America is heading

The fact they are doing this openly now is very worrying.

Ludlow and Fort Wright and Bellevue are all suburban Cincinnati. That’s supposed to be the liberal enlightened part of Kentucky.

That worries me a lot more than if it was happening in the sticks.

Bush did a good job of disavowing Duke when he was running for governor. You don’t see that sort of thing happening today.

Duke would be disavowed for being too moderate

It’s been going on for years. While they might feel a little more optimism right now, if there’s a material change, it’s that the media is giving them more attention.

(That’s not necessarily a good thing.)

More media kowtowing.

This is at best incompetence by the transition team, at worst real harm to medicine in the US.

Donald Trump’s return to the White House is already having a big impact at the $47.4 billion U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), with the new administration imposing a wide range of restrictions, including the abrupt cancellation of meetings such as grant review panels. Officials have also ordered a communications pause, a freeze on hiring, and an indefinite ban on travel.

The moves have generated extensive confusion and uncertainty at the nation’s largest research agency, which has become a target for Trump’s political allies. “The impact of the collective executive orders and directives appears devastating,” one senior NIH employee says.

Today, for example, officials halted midstream a training workshop for junior scientists, called off a workshop on adolescent learning minutes before it was to begin, and canceled meetings of two advisory councils. Panels that were scheduled to review grant proposals also received eleventh-hour word that they wouldn’t be meeting.

Loyalty before competence, am I right?

How’d you do? Put this to an actuarial pass/fail grade and you get what???

The real test will be: do we get new seasonal vaccines for the flu and COVID in the fall?

Part of the war on woke? First woman to head a US Military service removed from office. She took steps to reduce sexual harassment and assault at sea, and Fox News reported that resentment over that was one of the reasons for her dismissal.

Man when I saw those tiki dudes 8 years ago I was astonished that so many white supremacists were my age or younger, and college educated.

I didn’t see these guys beside me growing up. Where did they come from? It’s a Stasi-esque feeling to think that you might have a raging racist right next to you and not know it.

Excerpt from the gifted article below is particularly sad:

**American Christians have already proven willing to back Mr. Trump in the face of other acts he has taken that could be seen as counter to their faith, said André Gagné, the author of American Evangelicals for Trumpwho chairs the department of theological studies at Concordia University.

“In the end, they still view Trump as the champion of their interests, believing that he’s God’s chosen vessel to make America great again,” he said.

Others struggle to understand how that can be.

“Jesus instructed his followers to welcome the stranger,” said Randall Balmer, a historian of American religion at Dartmouth College who wrote Evangelicalism in America. He is mystified by the Christian support for Mr. Trump.

”How can I conclude anything other than the fact that we are a racist, misogynist, xenophobic people,” he said.**

Who is Jo Ellis, the transgender pilot wrongly named in DC crash?

She served in the Iraq War and the fight against the Islamic State. Now she is the latest victim of a far-right hoax machine that has repeatedly smeared trans people as killers
