2026 MLB Baseball Thread

OK, congrats LAD, again.
So, we have something look forward to: the impending lockout at the end of 2026!
Caused by the poor billionaires not being able/willing to compete.

Yup. Forget a salary cap. Game needs a salary floor, to force teams to spend.

Mets are having a really rough postseason… lost Diaz, and now Alonso.

White Sox sign Munetaka Murakami. I’m obsessed with the author Haruki Murakami and am pumped to turn my blank White Sox jersey into a Murakami for the upcoming season.

White Sox getting the #1 pick means that all 3 of my teams have gotten the #1 pick since 2023 (Bedard to Blackhawks ‘23, Caleb to Bears ‘24) which reflects how miserable it’s been to follow them over the last few years (and the Cubs being good just makes it worse :sob:).

I’m also obsessed with the author Murakami so fully understand.

Jays just signed Kazuma Okamoto but I am not a fan of any of the writers named Okamoto.

It is as if this team is playing a different game: they build to win, not to make the billionaire owner richer.

Diaz and Tucker both signed deals after rejecting qualifying offers, which means the Dodgers will forfeit their second, third, fifth and sixth highest picks in this summer’s draft. They’ll also pay both of them more than double in taxes. And in the end, it doesn’t matter.

To the Dodgers, only winning does.

I mean, I assume that one day the LAD owners will run out of fun money. Or, they will die and their inheritors won’t think the same way. Or, they’ll sell the team at a loss due to the wage liability. Something will eventually happen. Hard cap is possible, I guess, requires MLBPA approval, though MLB could require teams to hire replacement players and LAD and their players would be S.O.L.

I mean… yes and no. More payroll generally leads to more winning, which leads to more revenue in the form of regional broadcast deals, ticket and merchandise sales. You can make your money back on 400m in salaries if you’re in a huge market, but the economics don’t work if you’re in Pittsburg or Cincinnati.

I don’t think they make THAT much money. Spectrum could drop the TV deal, as it is STILL just baseball.

There were reports that in Ohtani’s first year with them, they made enough money in Japan (through various means) to cover his entire contract. That’s one season. They are still making plenty of money, even with all the huge contracts.

Hall of fame votes to be revealed soon. Based on public votes, this guy thinks Beltran and Andruw Jones will be in

Beltran and Jones do indeed join Kent in this years’ class of inductees. I wonder if Beltran will steal Jones speech.

Guy doesn’t need to waste his whole summer playing. Just wait it out, see who is in the playoff hunt, and play half a season.

Makes sense. I mean he’s made enough that he doesn’t need the money. He’s also 41 and been a below average pitcher each of the past two season so I don’t see a lot of contenders knocking down his door to pitch this year. His best bet is to see which playoff contending team in June is need of a 4th or 5th starter.

It was fun watching him play his heart out in the playoffs last year. His refusal to leave the game when the manager visited the mound was priceless.

Would be nice if MLB allowed anyone to watch any other team via internet subscription. YouTubeTV could have a separate “channel” for each team. What would be a decent amount to pay for a whole season? How about $100 for the season? How about $500 for every game?
(Disclaimer: I wouldn’t pay to watch baseball.)
If they have to “black out” the LAD local team when they play, say Milwaukee, then MIL fans in LA can’t watch that MIL game. Tough Crap.
Might put a dent in LAD fandom. People might choose to revert to their “first team” instead of paying for cable for 6 months (I have a friend who does this).

No way that Rogers TV will or should give up their Jays tv rights in Canada to MLB.com. Jays are a national team owned by Rogers and the Canadian WS ratings were phenomenol. The viewership was about two thirds of the US viewership despite the latter market being 10 times larger.

Only the 2010 Vancouver Winter Games have had better Canadian tv viewership in recent years.

They have that. MLB TV. If you use T Mobile for your cell service, you actually get it for free.

Yeah, I found MLB TV to be great when I lived out of market. It’s only $130 for the season if you just want 1 team and $150 for all teams. NFL Sunday ticket was a complete ripoff by comparison at over $300 a season.

I looked briefly at that. Unfortunately if there is a local network MLB TV geoblocks that game.

Skubal won his arbitration. New record for a player within the arbitration as well as for the salary awarded by a panel. $32 million.
