2026 FIFA World Cup Discussion

Ironically, June and July are lovely months to play soccer in Vancouver but we have a retractable roof. It is great for a November CFL match but superfluous for summer soccer.

Still laughing at this. Trump knows zip about soccer, even less than he knows about hockey.

This. I’d say pushing to 9pm local might be a good move in some places.

European tv viewers will not be pleased about 9 pm

Record.
Turn off phone.
Watch uninterrupted when they wake up.

He seemed he was on his high school soccer team.

Not getting one of these packages. I will instead be taking out a high tier Canada Red membership and hope for the best.

Tangent: Iranian chess star Parham Maghsoodloo was recently denied a visa to play in a high profile chess tournament in Las Vegas (the Las Vegas Freestyle Grand Slam). He was one of 16 people to qualify, and the tournament will feature the 5 highest rated players in the world so it isn’t exactly chicken feed.

Will apply on Sept 10 for Vancouver stadium tickets even though we won’t know the teams playing by then.

I saw the comparable US announcement. Both announcements lacked meaningful detail beyond the start date.

Draw to be held in Las Vegasd, according to sources.

Maybe they can hold it inside Allegiant Stadium, one of those indoor stadiums with, wait for it, GRASS! Yup, one of two indoor stadiums (ARI being the other) with grass NOT chosen for the WC 2026.
Used as the Final for Leagues Cup, Gold Cup and three Copa America matches.
I don’t know if the dimensions inside fit a FIFA-approved field (or inside the State Farm).

After researching, yes, these stadiums were built to be excluded from the FIFA World Cup.

This is going to have an impact on people coming in, especially those not in the Visa Waiver Program - but who knows, it might impact those countries, too.

I’m sure it won’t be a problem, especially for anyone coming from a place Trump thinks is a shithole country. Or Brazil - which, it might now qualify since it’s trying to punish trying to be an authoritarian. Fans of those places never want to go to somewhere like the World Cup.

State Department may require visa applicants to post bond of up to $15,000 to enter the US

It will be interesting to see the eventual list of countries impacted. I am sure it will be scientifically determined rather than subject to Trump’s whims.

You mean that Dear Leader’s whims aren’t scientific? Heresy!

If I ever visit the US again I must remember to leave my electronic devices home in case Dear Leader’s border guards find my GoActuary posts!

Who would have thought out all the possible issues 64 years after the agreement??

So, FIFA wants someone to pay for the suites that box owners own so that the box owners can sit in their own boxes. Looks as if the stadium owner, whoever that is, will pay. And it’s a lot, apparently.
Just move all the matches to some other stadium, IMO. Tickets have not been sold yet, I don’t think. If FIFA get their money, then they won’t bother moving the matches.

I predict a lot of half empty stadiums if they do this.

They should have learned their lesson from Club World Cup: games featuring minnows or David vs Goliath didn’t draw enough demand to justify the ticket price and there were lots of empty stadiums. Save the price gouging for knockouts or later, when the quality teams will go head to head. Those will be able to fill up at high prices.
