I miss the old NFL when QBs ran the offense. Why doesn’t that happen anymore?

All the coaches got too old to continue playing QB

Coaches would also “run the play in”

Trying to picture Andy Reid doing this…

(he was 13…)

So the kid next to him must be… 5???

8 I think.

Andy Reid actually punted the kid later

Should have gone for it on 4th Down instead.

They didn’t have The Analytics in 1971

defenses are more complex. offenses are more complex. burden on QBs for reading and reacting and calling the play options as-is is harder today than previously. also, you don’t necessarily want the person calling the game to have their bell rung and have to choose next play while sorting the cobwebs.(assumes coach on headset is not also getting nearly concussed)
QB’s do make some changes to calls, sure. but the global offense? ain’t nobody got time for that these days

True, it is all much more complex. Nearly every player on Defense is now 20 times as good as in the old days. They are not individuals with individual goals. They are more team-oriented AND are also coached by top men. TOP Men!

Also, there’s an actual play clock that is strictly adhered to. Hell, the coaches sometimes can’t get a play called in time. They’ll call something that requires different personnel, so the play clock runs while the Defense is allowed to sub in.

Chuck Bednarik laughs at you while smoking a cigarette at half time.

Goals have changed for offenses. It used to be pretty simple:

Roses are red

Violets are blue (instead of, you know, VIOLET…)

If you got any sense

You’ll keep Butkus away from you

NFL leadership took care of all the Butkuses, so offenses can now focus on being offensive.

The current 40-second play clock was reduced from 45 seconds not too long ago. And these play clocks begin at the end of the previous play.

Prior to this, there was a 30-second play clock which began when the ball was spotted.

All this to say there is less time for a QB to call a play himself (or herself…)

Agree. Also, not sure it was addressed but to also control subs/personnel for the next play. How does a qb do that from the field in 40 seconds when they could still be on the griund when the 40 starts?

Not knocking who asked it, as pining for simpler times is common enough. But they were simpler!

Bad news: I don’t have aTV

Good news: The game is on Prime

Bad news: The first half

Good news: The second half

It was pretty funny hearing the crowd chant that while they were doing the post-game broadcast.
