2024 Worst Christmas Song Tournament

Chacun a son gout! I love anything by John Lennon.

Oh well then I have bad news for you because War Is Over is right AT the top of my worst Christmas Songs list.

Or at least it was… some of the monstrosities in Ted’s bracket might cause me to re-think that. A few I haven’t heard. But if you’d asked me last week I would say that I couldn’t imagine (see what I did there) a Christmas song I hated more than War Is Over.

Which is why I have much more muscle memory for typing “angles” than “angels”.

I would have liked to seen Lennon go head to head against McCartney. I’d have gone McCartney.

Also: No “Same Old Lang Syne” by Dan Fogelberg?? :face_vomiting:

Drank a toast to iiiiinnocence
We drank a toast to nooooow
To girls who marry for the wroooong reasons
And guys who stay man-whoooores

…oh and btw, all this drivel just happens to take place on Christmas eve, so, Christmas song!

How is I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus losing to this Killers song? I had never heard it before. I like the Killers. Presumably this is parody. But it’s terrible. ISMKSC is not a “bad” christmas song and this version is not dreadful.

Because … you didn’t ask for it? GoA recommendations carried a decent amount of weight in the selections and seeds, and if I’d have expanded the field to 48 or 64 songs it would have made the cut.

fair enough

Another befuddler. A tough matchup as both songs are actually good. Springsteen’s version of SCiCtT is a bit ham fisted, so in that sense, could be fairly in this tournament. But Happy Xmas may be a song that gets stuck in your head and annoys some people, but it’s actually a good song that still gets tons of radio play. Should not even be in the tournament, let alone losing this matchup.

Disagree. Boss shouldn’t even be here. An updated version of The Crystals, and then The Supremes. Always a treat when played in concert.

I don’t even know the other song, but I had to vote for it.

First, thank you for putting this together. A nice distraction.

The songs that made this contest are an interesting mix of:

  1. Obscure songs that pretty much never get played and most haven’t heard of
  2. Well known songs (many of which are good songs) covered by a celebrity that were done notoriously poorly
  3. Commonly played songs that are understood to be bad, but played tongue in cheek (e.g., I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas)
  4. Actual decent to good songs that get a lot of play but some people don’t like.

I get the scroogey approach to Christmas music. Sometimes I’m in that camp. Especially in October or on December 30.

But to me, this should be a contest of mostly category 3s. Category 1s maybe deserve a separate contest/conversation. Maybe some 4s get included in the contest because there is some polarity in people’s opinions. And maybe some truly atrocious 2s.

Two terrible Christmas songs that should be crushing some of the others I had to vote for.

Re: Bon Jovi and the Pogues. Both category 1 songs.

Two really good songs. Both bad covers. Neither should be in conversation of “worst christmas songs”

A travesty. These should be two of the semifinalists. When I think of truly bad Christmas songs (category 3), these are two of the three I would name first.

Neither should be in this tournament. Boss’s could be in a tournament of pure 2’s (bad covers of typical Christmas songs), but I highly doubt it deserves to be in that. Happy Xmas is a prototypical 4 (gets radio play, is a decent to good song, but can be an earworm and many people don’t like it because of that combo).

I think I just heard a version of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer by Smokey Robinson. Not enjoying it… :-1:

Could not agree more. I like The Killers but that particular song is way way WAY worse than ISMKSC.

I can only assume that the people voting for ISMKSC did not bother to listen to The Killers song.

What? No… Happy Christmas War Is Over is the absolute worst Christmas song that exists.

I could see that Christmas Canon (with the children’s choir) being a candidate, although I don’t hate it. It’s more overplayed than bad. Although I also don’t understand it, as when I hear Canon in D sadness is the emotion that comes to mind. (Which also makes it an odd wedding song choice to me.)

What?
