2024 Presidential Debates Thread

The discussion about replacing Biden was immediate and real on MSNBC afterwards. If you aren’t getting their support, you are in trouble.

Democrats haven’t had a reason to replace Biden. His first term was successful, and he had previously been able to shake off age questions like at the SOTU. But he has looked old in recent weeks in all of his public appearances, and maybe he has crossed a real threshold on age. If he is there now, where will he be in 4 years?

Biden needs to hand this over. Not because he can’t do the job of POTUS today, and make good decisions, but his most important job right now is win the election, and last night did not earn him a new vote.

And who takes over who can do better against trump at this point?

Anyone who takes over will have problems putting together a ground game unless the Biden campaign is able to hand over their resources without losing a ton of volunteers. So it’s tough.

That was a disaster. If the Democrats actually believe anything they say and it’s not just all about power they need to replace him with someone much younger ASAP or we’ll have a Trump for the next 12 years as POTUS.

Trump and Biden are the best candidates we got because if there were somebody better the people would have voted for them.

I’m sure “someone” can outpoll Biden.

Once you narrow down on an actual named individual that gets much harder to be sure of.

We’re merely at a local maximum, not a global

Well the party has to do some emergency thinking that should have been done a year ago. We just need someone coherent, middle of thr party Democrat. Where’s Truman when you need him?

I think part of the reason the Dems have been running Biden is because there aren’t any clear alternatives, at least when measured on the critical “who can beat Trump?” metric.

Biden is the Dem candidate we got because no viable Dem wanted to challenge the incumbent.

Maybe we should take this election off then because Biden doesn’t pass that question anymore.

That assumes there would be fair elections in 2028.

While that is more likely than not… I think that’s a risky assumption to make.

I was being facetious. The Democrats can’t rest on the security that Biden will win the election and so we can just not deal with the problem of nominating someone.

I wish this forum software had easy-to-access red font.

It wasn’t sarcasm. If Biden is the best we can do then we may as well.

In my Twitter feed, all of the white pundits / reporters are asking for Biden to drop out. And all of the black people that I follow are posting “Trump said what?” wrt to the comment about migrants taking “black jobs” and getting even more riled up against Trump.

Yeah I was texting my BIL wtf is a black job?

I came here to post that. What a painful experience. Biden looked old and confused. Trump looked pretty good, but lied his ass off.

There’s no mechanism for that. Barring a catastrophic health issue, the nominee is Biden.

From a debate perspective, anyone who takes the stage.

Gavin Newsom seems like a pretty obvious choice. I like Pete Buttigieg as well, but gay, so a risk, but he would have destroyed Trump out there last night.

Age becomes a catastrophic health issue 100% of the time.

If Biden withdraws his candidacy, the Dems will amend their nominating rules to permit another candidate to be brought forward.

Even if Biden doesn’t withdraw his candidacy…the Dems could adjust their rules. They have, for example, already tweaked the rules to enable someone to be formally nominated before Ohio’s ballot access deadline (which is before the Dems’ convention).
