2024 Presidential Debates Thread

There’s a well circulated video of her dad telling her to be careful and her saying she doesn’t care about the consequences of endorsing candidates. I think it was a senate race in TN that she first spoke up.

Doesn’t seem to hurt her

She probably has more liquid assets than Musk.

She certainly has enough that she can generally be pretty open about her politics (note that she did explicitly endorsed Biden in 2020). So I don’t think she’s trying to be too careful about “ticket sales”.

As I mentioned, I think she’s going for the more socially-responsible angle of trying to influence non-Swifties along with energizing her own fan (by way of getting them to register to vote).

When her tickets are fetching 5x the sales price or more on the secondary market, she can be a bit selective in who is going to show up at her concerts. Or not feel too bad if a few people get upset about her intentions about speaking out on the election. The shows will still sell out.

Obviously the Dixie Chicks are a counter example to that, but they had a lower fan base to start with and made much more inflammatory statements.

Swift is worth $1,300,000,000 and will only certainly increase that wealth unless she does something to tank it. If she entirely stopped singing today, she’d get royalties and investment growth dwarfing what a majority of us will earn in our lifetimes, combined.

She could afford to make as explicit a political statement as she wanted. She could go Rage Against the Machine, f**k Donald Trump levels of endorsement if she wanted and she’d continue to get richer, probably noticeably more slowly.

Friendly notice there is a reasonable chance that September 10th, 2024 was the last time Donald Trump will ever debate a politician on TV.

The only people who might want another Trump debate are the tv networks.

I hope the VP debate is still on.

Oh gods I forgot the VP debate was still a thing.

We had the Prosecutor vs. the Felon, now it’s the Coach vs. the Bully.

At least the messaging seems to be syncing up with the one police report:

Agree… I’m just assuming she’d rather not slow the rate too much if she can help it.

If her fairly benign endorsement has 98% as much benefit to Kamala Harris as “f*** Trump” would while reducing the rate of her wealth increase by 2% then that’s probably a nice sweet spot.

Republican Swifties are probably FAR less turned off by “I’m voting for Harris; you should research and vote for who you support” than “f*** Trump”.

A lot of people are still capable of saying “I disagree with your politics but there are other things I like about you.”

And if Swift’s benign endorsement actually moderates the viewpoint of a few MAGA Swifties… even better. Even if it only moves the needle for some fans from “voting for Trump and willing to participate in violent coup” to “voting for Trump but unwilling to participate in violent coup” then that’s still a net positive for the world.

I would pay immigrants to eat our Canadian geese.

I agree. For example, I used to listen to Ted Nugent. I didn’t necessarily agree with his positions but I could ignore them. Once he came out as full MAGA He lost me completely and he got purged from the playlists. Taylor Swift’s position is the ideal. She states her position, then tells the people that care they need to do their own research independently. Everything about her life is on display, every decision she makes is noticed and questioned. So her hiding her political position is ridiculous, especially for someone who is as outspoken about certain issues like she is.

2 things to note:

  1. She didn’t endorse Hillary since the play at the time was that Hillary was the swamp backed candidate that the establishment wanted and TS felt that her endorsement would actually hurt Hillary (as per NYT).
  2. Do not be deceived by the amount of new voters since it is a lot easier to click on a link and register to vote than to actually go out and vote. (unless you live in a vote by mail state)

I can’t resist the weird tangent. My town has a nice park along the river. For years, we had a goose problem. Finally, they put up a simple, 3 foot high, plastic-net fence along the water’s edge.

The theory was that the geese get nervous if they can’t see a direct route back to the water and safety. Seems to have worked.

JD Vance makes a good point about Swift:
