PETE ROSE now eligible for the HOF ! ! ! ! !

no reason the Mets would hand it to Atlanta, but also no reason to take a risk diving to make a play

Nimo jogging to 1st in the 9th on the DP was a nice touch. He wanted no part of potential extra innings and I don’t blame him.

I read that Anderson, Smith Shawver, and Waldrep were possibilities.

:-?

I Had never heard of that condition. Is it just out of spite so that he dies without the knowledge that he finally got in?

Yeah, that’s been the speculation for years. He had a “lifetime” ban from baseball. Many people, including me, interpret that as meaning he was posthumously eligible.

Would it be ironic if there were a betting line on him getting in within the next n years?

If that was the case, Shoeless Joe Jackson would be in the HOF and he’s not. To buy the idea that Rose might now get in, the premise has to be that MLB will declare “HOF ineligibility does not apply to individuals who are deceased” and it wasn’t going to make that statement until after Rose died.

It would be even more ironic if Rose put a bet down on that before he died.

Which, if he did, then given his track record on betting one should take the other side of his bet.

Weird scenes

I think Rose, like Shoeless Joe, would need to be removed from the permanently ineligible list for the veterans committee to consider him.

I think a good lawyer could make a case for it.
Unless “lifetime” means “everyone-ever’s lifetimes.”
And, they have their own rules and don’t give a crap about a lawyer’s opinion, which is like a cow’s opinion.

That’s a moot point.

SJJ was a different player in a different era, accused of a different transgression. I’m not so sure their posthumous HOF candidacies are apples to apples.

Also, I looked at SJJ’s stats. I am not sure they are HOF worthy. He was great, but he only really played 9 seasons. His numbers were outstanding for those 9 seasons, but HOF usually requires some accumulations that are just impossible on 9 years. Like 1700 hits is great for 9 years, but that is low for a potential HOF-er.

SJJ’s percentage numbers are ridonkulous though by today’s standards. His career slugging was like .517, yet his career HR total was only in the 50’s. He only hit double digit HR’s in a season once. That’s a lot of doubles and triples.

I fixed your quotes.

This conversation has evolved into something utterly off track. Quite milking this just to get attention, or you and I are gonna have a real beef.

there are players who were so great, if even for a short period, they would still be in (Koufax, Kiner, Jackie, Puckett, Gordon, Sutter, Dizzy Dean, Hack Wilson) and some of these weren’t even as dominant

BTW judging HRs prior to Ruth is silly

Cheeses rice! The cream really rises to the top with you.

This thread is legendairy.
