2024 College Football Discussion

Was at a bar, but the audio was that shithead McAfee.

Also watched an LAK game, so came out even.

I-N-I!!!

I never really got into following U of I football. They were mostly atrocious when I went there ('01-'04).

He did not show good decision-making. Ate the ball for the sack way too many times. Yes, tOSU had him under siege, but a QB has to be more aware of whatā€™s going on and respond accordingly and he didnā€™t.

Thx. I think heā€™s one of the many QBs that will get drafted, but the consensus seems to be there are 2 really good QBs and a bunch of guys you can try out and hope they develop.

I was there when they became the only Big 10 team ever to defeat all the other Big 10 teams in the same season. It was easy to be a fan.

I-N-I !!!

I was there when they were pretty good in the late 80ā€™s with Jeff George at QB. This was a very good 2024 season, and they did it without a lot of top talent (seemingly no NFL level draft talent)

The Citrus bowl was a good game. I donā€™t quite understand the SC coach getting all riled up about substitution rules, but they came up short, so all is good. And Altmyer says heā€™s coming back (but saying so now doesnā€™t mean it will really be true)

Now letā€™s hope the basketball team goes and plucks some ducks tonight in Oregon.

All 4 BYE teams lose.

So I read up more on the controversy/feud between coaches at the Illinois vs U of South Carolina Citrus Bowl, and this is how I understand it,

SC had a designed play where the kickoff receiver put his arms out to feign a touchback signal, and then when Illinois advance men on the kickoff team got close, they pulled up as they thought the play was not gonna happen. But then the kick returner picked up the ball when the Illinois players were thinking the play was over, and got a good return out of it. Ha Ha on Illinois, donā€™t you know itā€™s not over 'til itā€™s over and the returner only put his hands out, not waving them around.

So, the Illinois coach played a little chess of his own, frequently doing last second defensive substitutions in order to break the SC offensive rhythm and lessen the SC QBā€™s ability to read the defense at the line.

Then, an Illini player got hurt, which gave the Illinois coach a reason to go across the field to check on the downed player, at which time the Illinois coach gave the SC sideline the hand signal for substitution, which was suspiciously like the ā€œhands out but no waveā€ thing the kick returner had done. The SC coach went batcrap crazy at the apparent insult.

Do I have this right?

Small sample but it does raise the old question of the value of a weekā€™s rest versus getting a bit rusty?

I didnā€™t understand it when I first read about it, and I still donā€™t understand it now. But I didnā€™t watch any of the game.

Georgia shouldnā€™t have even been in the CFP, because they lost their starting QB, which should be an automatic disqualification.

Small sample.
Boise which got a BYE was a dog.
AZ/TX 4/5 game went 2OT
Georgia lost its QB is SEC title game
Oregon got blown out but did win a close one v tOSU regular season

We can also look at the teams in the first round that played or did not in a Conference Championship game:

  1. CLEM-TEX: both played.
  2. TENN-tOSU: both rested.
  3. SMU-PSU: both played.
  4. IU-ND: both rested.

OK, so that was wasted time. Hmm, I wonder if the rankings were made to synchronize these?

PSU Coach thinks every college team needs to be in a conference.

Once upon a time, PSU was an independent.
Uniformity IMO, means: smaller conferences, every team plays the other teams in its conference, no conference championship required. Thatā€™s somewhere between 8 and 10 in each conference.

Oh, and this guy wants it easier for his (and other) teams, but more difficult to determine 1st and 2nd places:

Franklin, who coached at Vanderbilt before Penn State, praised the SEC for remaining at eight league games, which the leagueā€™s coaches wanted. The SEC has repeatedly considered going to nine league games during Franklinā€™s time in the Big Ten.

ā€œI was not a math major at East Stroudsburg, but just the numbers are going to make things more challenging if youā€™re playing one more conference game,ā€ he said.

More challenging for teams playing, sure. It is a lot easier beating up on Direction-State Universities and looking like a top 12 team and whining about how good you are (part of the coachā€™s job these days). The Big 10 got in 4 teams out of 12, perhaps BECAUSE of playing an extra, ā€œtougherā€ conference team than the SEC.

That was an entertaining game

I was in the car in the first quarter and turned the game on. I was aghast at how biased the announcing seemed. Then at the first commercial break, I discovered I was listening to the ND broadcast, not the national broadcast.

Yeah, pretty good one.

Big Irish fan here, loved the game. Glad they came back, especially since I didnā€™t want them to lose due to poor officiating (both the botched holding non-call and the pass interference on a ball that was way underthrown).

Penn State QB was terribleā€¦lost the game with the late INT. But that was the correct PI callā€¦ball was underthrown but catchable, and the defender never turned his headā€¦by the book PI call.
