Gretzky is good friends with Trump and Trump has promoted him to be the first governor of the 51st state. Bobby Orr has been a more vocal Trump supporter.
The great ones get it
I really wanted to get into this tournament. It was so intense, just what I was looking for. It’s even okay that the main faces representing my country are players I hate (The Tkachuks). It’s happened before and I still cheer for USA. But the intensity mostly was created from politics. And that can be great when your country is the one that feels attacked and you rise up in the adversity. But this time it was too weird for me. My country is the antagonizer in this conflict and the faces of the team are so into it. It just left me at point where I wasn’t cheering for anyone.
I’m sure this tournament quenched the thirst for some fans longing for a best on best international tournament (especially Canadians) but I was bummed I guess.
Cathal Kelley says it best as to why Gretzky is no longer a hero in Canada.
Its such a shame.
I followed his NHL career in the 80s (Kings) and 90s (Blues/Rangers)
Definitely a bummer. Seems like only yesterday he was fighting crime with MJ and Bo Jackson.
HIs son in law is Dustin Johnson, moved to LIV golf which is run by Saudi Arabia. Guy doesn’t represent Canadian values.
Ovechkin moves to 10 away from tying Gretzky.
Once upon a time, I hoped Gretzky’s record would never be broken but now I don’t care. Gretzky and Orr both cast their lot with Trump so it is hard to like them now.
We’re 5 days away from the trade deadline, and action is starting to pick up. Last night had the Seth Jones trade to Florida for Spencer Knight. Chicago also gets Florida’s 1st-round pick in 2026 … unless the Panthers trade it before the 2026 draft, in which case it becomes the 1st in 2027.
And, Chicago retains $2.5M per on Seth’s $9.5M contract. For the next 5 years. But the cap is going up to at least $150 million by 2030, probably more, so that’s really manageable. There’s no way anything is going to happen that causes the growth in the cap to slow down.
Meanwhile, the Blues are on a 4-game winning streak to put themselves within spitting distance of the 2nd wild card spot in the West, meaning they’re moving from being sellers to potential buyers. This would be completely on-brand for the Blues, who would position themselves to either be 1st-round fodder for whoever comes out of the Pacific [but 2 games of that sweet, sweet home playoff revenue] or picking 16th in the draft again and continuing on their journey toward NHL mediocrity banking on the perpetual promise of we have lots of prospects in the system, they’ve got lots of talent, we’re going to be great one day in the fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuture.
Ovechkin now needs 9 to tie, 10 to pass Gretzky. His career power play goals (321) moves into a tie for 204th on the all-time goal scoring list.
Rantanen looks to be back on the trade market, since he won’t sign an extension with Carolina before the trade deadline. Tampa sends a pair of 1st-round picks ('26, '27) and TOR’s 2nd in '25 to Seattle for Bjorkstrand (middle-6 guy) and Gourde (3rd liner). Pittsburgh pulls the plug on the Michael Bunting experiment, sending him to Nashville for Luke Schenn for … they’re going to flip Schenn to someone else? Kind of a pointless move IMO, but Kyle Dubas has teh analytics.
Blues win again last night, so they’re probably not selling unless Toronto grossly overpays in desperation to get Brayden Schenn, which … that would be a fucking disaster, but it’s Toronto and desperation is setting in after watching Tampa overpay to improve.
LA Kings think they need more offense. Seems they need more defense with these recent losses.
Took my English SIL to see the Canucks beat the Wild tonight. Only mild booing during the US anthem but a boisterous singing of O Canada. More importantly the two points moved the Canucks back into the last playoff spot.
Still trying to process that Brad Marchand is no longer a Bruin!

Ovechkin moves to 8 away from Gretzky with the ENG. I missed it when I looked at the box score yesterday. 33 for the season, 7 away from 40 which would make him the 2nd-oldest behind Gordie Howe to get to 40. (44 goals in 1968-69; he turned 41 the day after the season ended. Oh, and 59 assists for 103 points, which was 3rd in the league.)
If (when?) he gets to 5 away, I’ll start the countdown in the thread headline.
O Canada! All 6 teams are in a playoff spot right now.
Ottawa still has some work and Montreal/Vancouver are in very precarious places. That would be fun to see.
My Habs had been right below the line for some time and had not given up, not even close. They were in the 30% range to make it for months, nearly same as Rangers. Now they are looking good to be in.
