2023 MLB Baseball Thread

Another good White Sox analysis - this one about the play where Oneil Cruz’ ankle got broken. I’d seen several replays, but hadn’t caught that Cruz went right into Zavala’s knee.

I feel bad for Cruz and baseball is going to lose an exciting young player for 3 to 4 months after his surgery but I can’t fault the Chicago catcher in anyway for that play. Just seems like Cruz had a kind of awkward slide there.

You knew this was coming.

An obligatory article that discusses the need for beer sales at stadiums to be extended into the later parts of games because shorter games means less beer sold.

the preseason game i went to cruised to the end in 2:07. I told my kid that they will def extend the beer sales if that’s how fast it is going to be.

And next, I foresee tv networks complaining that gross ad revenue is down due to shorter commercial breaks.

Commercial breaks were shortened a few years ago.

OK. I had read that inning changeovers were set now at something… 2:05 maybe? I thought maybe that they were tweaked this year, but I believe you. So the number and total length of commercials is not down. The whole amount of time decrease is not playing time or commercial time, it’s all just time when the players are on the field and not doing anything that has been shortened.

I checked the internet. All the articles are from 2019. I hadn’t known that either until just now.

Yup. Also, they’re not “wasting time” shifting, so the shittier batters can get on base easier than simply practicing hitting to places where the fielders are not.

Next, they’ll be telling outfielders not to move up or back. Must be in a drawn circle before pitch is thrown or something stupid like that.

spring training game I swore had 2:30 on the clock. but that could incorporate the time for the first pitch to be delivered (they get 30 seconds between batters, so 2 min of TV time and 30 sec of dawdling maybe?).

So what was the reasoning behind the prior beer rule? The rule was that they closed down beer sales after the 7th inning or the 7th inning stretch, right?

I thought it was 2 fold: 1) you would have less time to consume the beers so you would drink fewer and get less drunk, have a lower BAC when you leave the park. 2) you would have more time after purchasing/consuming your last beer before leaving the ball park so your BAC might be on its way down?

But this change doesn’t seem to work into either of those really. So maybe the goal was something different?

Lowered liability of serving someone who immediately gets in their car because the game is over.

Guessing analytics came in to play…

There is another factor that came into play as well. There were definitely some episodes at longer extra inning games. Games are accelerated on the back end as well.

I am sure that the cost of beer has nothing to do with it, A quick search shows that the average is $7. I want to find that park. I haven’t seen anything under $10 at an event in a while with more common prices being at least $12. Last game I went to it was $13 domestic and $15 import.

Yeah I just found a site that the A’s have a 12 oz beer for $6.50 not sure where that is in the stadium but I seem to recall something closer to your ~$12 - ~$15 a beer though that was at the micro brew stands that were everywhere. Maybe there is a bar that sells 12 oz cans of Coors light or something.

It said Coors field had $3 beers.

The article did say they listed the cheapest beer they found per stadium so there could be a wide range of prices even at a stadium.

This article from last year tried to find the cheapest price for a draft beer and hot dog at every MLB stadium.

Many of the cheap beers are 12 oz domestic, and you’ll pay a lot more than that in many of the same stadiums for a more standard 16oz craft/import

I go more to Mercedes Benz stadium in ATL than I do to the Braves stadium. MBS puts their menus and prices online. Current prices:
Large Premium Draft Beer 10.50
Large Domestic Draft Beer 8.50
Small Premium Draft Beer 6.00
Small Domestic Draft Beer 5.00

I believe large is 20oz and small is 12oz, and the small isn’t available at every vendor. You definitely can get a $5 beer if you look around a little

Canned beers I think are always 16oz. Premium costs $10, domestic $8

Petco Park

That’s a lot of kibble for the price of one beverage.

I don’t think I would drink a Bud Light Seltzer if you paid me $15, let alone entertain the concept of paying $15 to drink one.

Rays 13-0 start ties best record since 1900.

In other news, Boston pitching is pretty rough.

Saw a Jomboy today about the umps missing 2 things on one play and neither manager asking them to review. But after the crowd sees the replay on the jumbotron they give one of the managers a second shot at a challenge.

Here is their explanation of it. Pretty entertaining, though they read lips and lots of bad words so probably NSFW, especially if your speakers are on. Forewarned is forearmed.
