2022 Winter Olympic Games

Shit, that downhill slope is hard.

Is it ironic that the snowboard halfpipe “height meter” is expressed in “feet & inches”?

Normally don’t watch a lot of the figure skating, but Nathan Chen is a poet on ice.

They won’t let us watch it in the US. Might have to sneak over the border.

Sorry, I would have posted the CNN story but it focused more on the politics rather than her performance.

Anyone watching the men’s freestyle skiing big air event? Scary stuff.

ABC’s of Russian olympics: Always Be Cheatin’.

Speculation is that the positive test was a 15 year old testing positive for diuretics, which are not performance enhancing but banned b/c they can be used as masking agents. But given her coach’s history of being abusive to her students, especially regarding their weight, it seems to be more likely a case of an abusive coach forcing a child to lose weight rather than cheating.

Yeah, that was rough for Mikayla Shiffrin (sp?). I so badly wanted the interviewer to offer some kind of “Hey, we’re all really proud of all you’ve done for so many years, this is just one bad day, you got this” encouragement. Especially since we finally got a conversation around mental health during the Tokyo games last summer. I think that since he essentially let her see herself as a failure for one bad run, it’s going to negatively affect her performance in the future.

I actually didn’t see that interview. I watched some of the men’s downhill. The second guy wiped out, and was obviously injured. The fourth (or maybe 5th) guy badly missed one of the gates. A little later a guy had a good run, but at the bottom of the hill his face was covered in blood. They thought maybe a glancing blow of a gate bounced his pole into his nose. A lot more guys couldn’t stick to the track. It was brutal.

Obligatory History:

Snowboardcross one of the best events of the games imo. Women’s was fun to watch last night, men’s upcoming tonight

She is just a kid.

I picture her mother saying “now dear, you don’t need to go off that jump, there is a perfectly good route down the side”

Maybe this has been mentioned, but I havn’t read through the whole thread…

But it’s funny that the ski-jump tricks competition is basically set up in the parking lot of a nuclear power plant.

It’s still a remarkably non-scenic backdrop. The area around the biathlon course is ugly, too. (probably the same stuff from a different angle)

Weaselette has the same reaction. We thought it was a nuclear plant too. At least it’s not actively belching smoke into the air while the competition is happening.

They should have painted it to make it look like trees or mountains or something. That would have at least been some good satire.

Ehhhxcellent!! We have everyone fooled that this is a nuclear power plant!
Smithers, break out the expensive champagne!

I’ve heard of “communities” doing that with silos or something.

I think this is what I was thinking of.
