Interestingly on NBC sports app all of those events have commentary. The only one I’ve found that didn’t was that figure skating one that was on a “prime time” broadcast.
It looks like you found the answer but I was going to suggest that maybe your TV is set to SAP…one time I was watching NASCAR and there were no TV announcers, but I could hear the track’s PA announcer and thought that was pretty cool.
Okay, story time. When I was in Aberdeen, Scotland for a semester overseas in 1998, it was the Winter Olympics time. So the BBC is gonna show, obviously, sports in which the British empire has some chance in earning a medal over, you know, everything else, like downhill skiing and luge and speed skating all all the other stuff that’s, you know, interesting. You know what they showed for like 23 hours a day? Women’s curling. Because the British team had an outside chance of getting a medal. [spoiler alert - they didn’t.]
Which meant I saw squadoosh about the rest of the world or the other sports. You know what Winter Olympics sport I despise to this day because of that? You guessed it - curling. If I never see another rock, house, or end again, it’ll be too soon.
Now, don’t get me wrong, if they’d wear uniforms like the figure skaters or speed skaters, maaaaaaaybe I’d tune in to the highlights. As it is, I’d rather they don’t even have the competition.
So, did you find the commentary?
I decided to buy a VPN for a month, and watch CBC, rather than peacock. But maybe next time I’ll get peacock, and I’m curious what I’d be getting.
feel the rhythm
it’s bobsled time
Just watched the Italy/Sweden mixed doubles curling match. That was an awesome throw to end the match.
Not quite as cool as the gold medal match in 2018, but pretty cool nonetheless.
We watched this too. When Sweden messed up and gave up 5 to Italy in that one end I thought it was over, but they made it a nail biter. Those last two throws were both amazing.
Having grown up surrounded by curling, I could not believe it would ever be considered “cool”. However it was a highlight of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games as fans did the wave and chants at the rink. I guess it is such an uncool sport that it is considered cool?
I don’t understand why people enjoy watching american football (and certainly not baseball. I kinda get basketball and occasionally soccer), so to each his own, I guess…
One thing I will say about curling is that it is a lot harder than it looks! My daughter and I had a curling lesson after the Vancouver Olympics and it made me appreciate its complexity. I could see it would be fun to play however after a few more lessons. More fun than playing golf certainly.
If I lived somewhere cold I could definitely see myself doing some curling. Looks fun
Curling is fun. was in a league once. we have options where I live.
one of the PTs after i tore my achilles was an olympic curler in 2014.
it is more accessible and fun for all at the same time than golf IMO. They have ways to make it work for people who can’t really crouch and glide out pushing the 42lb rocks. slipping and falling is a risk though.
Indeed. I’ve curled once. It was a lot of fun until i slipped and got a mild concussion.
Yeah, I tried curling once and it was super fun.
Did you know that the ice is bumpy? It is! It’s not smooth like for figure skating or hockey. It’s covered in flat-ish round bumps.
But over time as the sweepers sweep the ice, it gets (unequally) smoother in places, which can really affect how the stone travels in terms of both speed and direction. Generally the ice gets faster and faster as it smooths out, so the amount of force you need on the stone at the end is way less than at the beginning.
Sweeping is extremely exhausting. (But fun!)
You don’t need a cold outdoors; just an ice rink!
.
:-?
Does not compute. You don’t understand the goal of a sport you’ve played?
She did get a concussion…
Curlers have a reputation for partying before, during and after curling so there may be some lack of awareness while playing. An old joke is that Olympics drug testing show traces of marijuana for snowboarders but traces of beer for curlers.
Right. I played it once for about half an hour, and I don’t remember what the rules were. That’s probably true of a lot of things I’ve done once, briefly.
Canadian women’s hockey team feel compelled to mask up against ROC since ROC didn’t provide results of COVID tests. Canada-US clash tomorrow: always a good game.
