Showing improvement, and especially good that the brain is intact

Yes, very encouraging news. It sounds like he’s awake now too, which is great. Hopefully he can make as close to a full recovery as possible.

I saw last night where ESPN (arm-twisting by the NFL, I’m guessing) is now trying to separate the hit from the cardiac arrest. Had on a doctor who said, ā€œWe don’t know if it was the hit or some other issue he already had.ā€ And, that is entirely possible, though not plausible.

Seems likely to be both. Like he had some undiagnosed sleeper condition that no one, including him, knew about. This condition made it more likely that he’d have a cardiac event. Then the hit was the proverbial straw that broke the camel’s back.

It wouldn’t have happened without both (the hit AND the underlying condition) because either one on its own is insufficient to cause that.

At least that’s what seems plausible to me. IANAMD.

I’m thinking along these lines too. When Chris Frogger had CC from taking a slapshot to the chest (think a frozen puck going about 100mph), he was back on the ice in a few days. Hamlin is still nowhere near that point yet.

I still think that Tee Higgins was taught Pei Mei’s 5 point palm exploding heart technique.

So first thing Damar wants to know is who won the game.

Think he will be disappointed they didn’t finish it?

True story?

Their reply should be: you need to sit out a play but we’re putting you right back in there.

Hamlin, 24, is able to move his hands and feet, the doctors said. He is unable to speak but was able to communicate in writing, Pritts said. Hamlin asked whether the Bills won Monday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals – a contest that was postponed after his collapse.

ā€œThe answer is yes, Damar, you won the game of life,ā€ Pritts said.

Asking about the game was a sign to doctors that ā€œnot only the lights are on, but he’s homeā€ and was a gratifying sign.

That is hilarious. He can probably recall part of the game. Sounds like he will be (or is) fine mentally, which is a testament to the early CPR efforts. Physically, there will be a significant recovery period as his muscle mass and strength are quite low. Because of his age, I think he can fully recover his strength over the next few months.

I never nearly died from an game injury but I was taken away from 2 different games in HS in an ambulance to the hospital and the first thing I wanted to know when someone arrived who stayed to the end of the game was who won.

Who the fuck is being critical toward Tee Higgins’ role? I mean, admittedly, I don’t read everything/anything on social media due to assumed idiocy.
It’s football, it’s a dangerous sport. Mama don’t your babies grow up to play fuh-baw.

Boyd said he knew that Higgins felt bad about the situation because he was involved in the final play before Hamlin was driven off the field in an ambulance. Boyd said he constantly checked in with his fellow Bengals receiver because of how Higgins felt after the game and said those who have been critical of Higgins’ role in the situation have been disrespectful.

I am not sure how much muscle mass he’d lose over 3 days. Muscle ā€œmassā€ due to glycogen and accompanying water store is highly variable, but it would be news to me if the underlying tissue atrophied significantly over a week. Maybe look at short duration space flight as an analogue.

Glad to see that Hamlin’s mom is being for-real classy, and that Tyler Boyd is looking out for Higgins as well.

Yeah, I assume his season (if not his career) is over, but I doubt he’s lost that much muscle mass since Monday night.

Update: it is being canceled, but they are still considering options to try to make it more fair to the Bengals and Bills.

The real losers are probably the Ravens, who now have zero chance of winning the AFC North. It was a slim chance going in but the cancellation reduces that chance to 0%.

Dumb question: how does this affect player stats?

With the TD pass, Joe Burrow set some sort of record for consecutive games with a TD pass. Does the cancellation negate the TD pass on his stats?

What about incentives in player contracts?

Minor concern: This is going to massively mess up Fantasy Football post-seasons.

Pretty much as expected.
Weird that anyone thought there was any other reasonable outcome.

Nearly all FFB leagues do not compete in week 18.
The solution that most leagues are going with is to count week 18 Cincy & Buf results to complete outstanding week 17 games.

Any FFB league that runs through week 18 was already massively messed up.

I guess that makes sense. Yeah, the Week 18 games will have screwy stats so it would be pretty weird to plan on using them in Fantasy leagues.

I guess the Bills are still playing for a potential first round bye. But the Bengals are only playing to determine whether they are the #2 seed or #3 seed, which isn’t a big prize. So their Week 18 stats are pretty bogus.

But I don’t know what else the Fantasy teams could do that makes sense either. It would be pretty screwy to try to mash up the two games as that will be influenced by the coin tosses. Maybe go with season averages for whomever you picked to play in Week 17???

I’m not doing a Fantasy team this year, so I’m unaffected.
