I have heard speculation that this is on the table. I guess after 9/11 the NFL put 1 week delay contingency plans into all Super Bowl stadium agreements. So while the plan for the SB is 2/12, the NFL has the authority to switch it to 2/19.
So they could add a week 19 where only this single game gets played. Then proceed with the playoffs and still have a 2 week window between the conference championships and the SB.
I’m surprised it doesn’t happen more often, but I think there is something involving the timing of the blow (according to some guy on the TV last night), and this web page:
Conclusions: We speculate that most sudden deaths related to impact to the chest (not associated with traumatic injury) are due to ventricular dysrhythmia induced by an abrupt, blunt precordial blow, presumably delivered at an electrically vulnerable phase of ventricular excitability. This profile of blunt chest impact leading to cardiac arrest adds to our understanding of the range of causes of sudden death on the athletic field and may help in the development of preventive measures.
the abrupt impact/cardiac event is usually brought up in baseball (hit by pitch or pitcher hit by liner). there are only a few (all sad) cases a year where it comes up. there is a piece of equipment sold to disperse the shock of the ball.
no clue what the scheduling reaction would be. there is nothing that could happen that is fair to all. (declared a tie, not counting it as anything, finishing in a week and pushing back playoffs, etc.) the situation is extreme and outside the bounds of what anyone has good capacity to quickly adjust to.
From 1996 to spring 2007, the USA National Commotio Cordis Registry had 188 cases recorded, with about half occurring during [organized sports]
The majority is Baseball, followed by Softball, Hockey, Lacrosse.
What seems rare is cause from a non-blunt object. Football players are more heavily padded and the impact from a person running is much less speed that from a ball or puck. The mass is greater, but so is the impact point. Plus, those being hot by a ball or puck most likely don’t see it coming
I think about Commotio Cordis on the Jewish day of atonement when it is customary to beat our chests when we talk about all the sins we have committed. I highly doubt there has ever been a documented case, but certainly wouldn’t rule out the possibility that at least one person has beat his chest with such gusto that he would go into cardiac arrest, and others would just assume that fasting was the primary cause.
Bart Scott being classy and blaming Tee Higgins for what happened. This is the same guy who advocated for the Ravens to intentionally injure Joe Burrow last season, so that the Bengals would be easier to beat.
Oh and NFL has said the game won’t resume this week. They still haven’t said what will happen, but at least the players now know to prepare for Week 18 at this point.
Bills beat writer spoke to Hamlin’s Uncle who said he’s on a ventilator. Yesterday needed it set at 100% but today only needs it for 50%, which is obviously big improvement.
The ventilator percentage is an improvement, but the fact that they had to flip him over onto his stomach is concerning, but that’s something they do with COVID patients to ease pressure on the lungs.
