Christian McCaffery is one that certainly fits into this category.
I’d be inclined to say “does it matter” given that the points for both RB and WR are the same?
If you want to “enforce” a designation in this regard, then I’d suggest you apply a factor (say 1.25, truncating result) to a “declared” RB’s rushing yds and the same factor to a WR’s receiving yards.
Here’s hoping for a Raiders blowout, 38-3 style. But I need San Diego to suck, so we’ll probably end up with something like 51-48 or it will be the Chargers rolling 38-3.
My proposal doesn’t “penalize” this so much as to make receiving yards worth more to a “declared” WR/TE and rushing yards worth more to a “declared” RB.
I also don’t think that “rare events” should be considered when determining set ups. In today’s league, RB are often used as a check-down for passing; so I think that should be recognized in scoring.
WR aren’t too often called on for rushing. They have been, but rarely (that I’ve seen, anyway).
It does matter, since the pool of WRs and RBs is different. In an extreme scenario where there were only 10 good RBs and 40 good WR/TEs, it would matter a great deal if one person got to use him as a RB and someone else used him as a WR. It might not be that extreme here, but a similar dynamic does exist, which is why redraft leagues have primarily RBs taken in the first round.
Letting each user choose, should make it fair, but UA? is suggesting that he has always chosen a designation, and asking which one should be used. I’d say he is a RB this year. But also think that each person making their own decision should be fine, too.
Patterson looks and feels like a WR this season on ATL. I’m not sure, but I don’t think it changes the game much by allowing Patterson to be selected in either spot, even if it would be slightly easier for a late picker to muster up a unique and competitive trio.
ETA: Yeah, looking at Patterson’s previous years, he was primarily used as a RB, albeit not a useful one for fantasy purposes. If given the choice, I’ll go with WR knowing what I know now.
Patterson was drafted as a first round pick as a WR. He is 6"4 and is very fast. The problem is he isn’t great at routes. He was relegated to special teams in Minnesota. Atlanta has finally found a way to play him. He doesn’t mind running between the tackles. Most of his passes that I have seen him catch are screen type plays.
I think the user should be allowed to choose him in either position.
He doesn’t really play like a typical RB or WR really…
This. Patterson is a RB (this year). He lines up in the backfield a lot. His carries are not from end-arounds. But I also have no problem if he is eligible for both RB/WR.
