Yeah, an England-Italy final would be incredible.
Unicorns!
These guys seem less scary than I’ve been envisioning
Gotta say I was hoping Spain would win, at least they were actively playing
I think the Spanish goalkeeper will be haunted for years to come about his decision to commit to one side well before Jorginho struck the ball.
Yeah, at least they were already in a precarious spot by that kick
I am a bit biased but that England-Denmark match was exciting. Kane did not disappoint. Looking forward to Italy.
Caught the last 3 minutes at least (on vacation). Final should be exciting.
The Guardian headline “England beat Denmark”. Number of comments - 4,474.
It’s going to take a while to wade through them all.
“Sam Matterface did his best to spoil the game with his utterly inane commentary.”
– “I liked the bit at the end of regulation when he appeared to suggest we were all fat. Which, to be fair, is accurate, if unflattering.”
“They’re putting that penalty in the British museum with all the other shit they’ve stolen.”
"If you want a drink to celebrate, don’t send Harry or Raheem to the bar.
They’ll fall over."
" the penalty area is very congested from this corner. No need for social distancing now, if all goes well"
As the camera pans to 67,000 fans spreading the Johnson variant all around.
“Haven’t seen Sterling fall that sharply since Brexit.”
“I dont want to read any English ever talk about the “cheating Italians”, about Maradona, about Lampards goal, about Henry’s hand, about the “Latin temperament”, this is was one of the most blatants acts of diving (sorry, the Guardian called a “calculated fall” in their live report and Lineker didnt even mentioned it) ever. Hypocrites since the world was created.”
– “There were no humans when the world was created”
But the top-rated comment, by far:
“Overriding feeling - thank fuck we don’t have to watch the final on ITV.”
Some of these are rather funny, e.g. “Haven’t seen Sterling fall that sharply since Brexit” but overall I am glad that Waterface is not the commentator on my feed.
I agree. If you’re gonna force players and fans to go to matches in two different cities, they’d better be close together.
Heck, with a multi-city set-up, each Group’s teams should be housed in one city, and that Group’s matches played in that city. Or, make it that Groups will play in two stadiums no more than, say, 50 miles apart.
World Cups should be formatted the same way.
The Rome-Baku group would have sucked. St Petersburg-Seville wouldn’t have been too great either. England only had to fly once to Rome and back.
The 2022 World Cup should pose no problems no matter what system is employed given the proximity of the stadiums to each other but the 2026 World Cup will certainly require a lot of planning around venues.
E
Agreed, but I think FIFA should stop awarding the World Cup to nations that will have to build a lot of otherwise unnecessary stadiums and other infrastructure as a condition of their bids. This would limit future World Cups to mostly Europe and the US, but that’s worth it to me to not have billions squandered by countries that really can’t afford it.
In ok with Qatar wasting their riches. China, too.
But Brazil and RSA did not deserve to get shafted like that
Yes, I’m taking sides.
I’m not OK with Qatar using indentured servitude and the number of people that died for this as a result. Such a waste of money and lives so that a few folks can line their pockets.
Well, yeah, if you want get all Human-Rightsy…
I agree there are a lot of reasons why Qatar shouldn’t host the World Cup.
I would make the same argument about the Olympics as the World Cup: they should only be played in cities where almost all of the infrastructure already exists. So many better ways to spend the billions involved.
