I love TAL, but there is something about Ira Glass’s voice that makes it hard for me to hear what he is saying, at any volume. My husband thinks I’m bonks.
Because of this, or are there other contributing factors? I kid, I kid.
One quick one I like is The Indicator. It’s daily M-F, 10 minutes or less, and hits one item in the economy in an interesting fashion. It’s by Planet Money/ NPR.
The quality of the voice can make a substantial difference for podcasts. I find it really hard to listen to excessive vocal fry and I generally fast forward to the next interview if it gets too much. It seems to affect me more with the female voice for some reason, even though there are quite a few male voices that have it.
Unlike TV, there are no subtitles to look at, so if the accent is too thick I might have to skip it too.
Was going to mention this before. Some of the podcasts have YouTube channels. It is great stuff if you can see them interacting like on Joe Rogan.
Joe Rogan even does videos clips in the podcast to show what they are talking about. Great stuff.
My eyes are at that age where any activity away from the computer, phone or TV screen is highly valued. Interviews in front of a live audience can be fun to watch though.
If you can you should watch some of the Joe Rogan stuff. He is great. Like the fighting stuff that he is passionate about. He generally has good stuff to see.
Do you think that Harris made a mistake by not appearing on his show? I think it would have been interesting.
I think she should have tried harder. He is good and most times listening to the guest. Look at him with Trump. You can’t tell where he is. That’s how he does most interviews.
Let me give the example of the one with Terrence Howard. https://youtu.be/nrOaFxNex7U?si=RRs3MR91xRbzuWPu
For most if us it’s obvious that Terrence is a lot off but see how Joe does it. He brings a sympathetic academic who is still fair in the analysis. Tells Terrence straight up your science is sh*t but anyway the system wouldn’t accept your line of questioning.
That’s 4 hours plus. I’m not listening to that whole thing, but if you want to point out a part you like I’m willing to listen.
I’m guessing you like Rogan’s show for the same reasons I dislike it: he often uses his show to let people amplify crackpot and absolutely false theories, and gives them a friendly and understanding response to positions that are pure bullshit. His show has amplified a lot of misinformation and disinformation. He does have some talent as an interviewer in getting people to open up about their beliefs, but does a disservice by amplifying crap IMO.
I’ll do a relisten and see what parts to recommend.
I didn’t learn to listen and get people to open up till I was already leading. I like how he creates a safe space and manages relationships. Recently something happened with the Trump interview on YouTube which seems like it got a shadow ban. He was very understanding but probably pissed but he is just ok. He is a masterclass in people skills.
The podcasts I know he is really genuine are the fighting ones that he loves. You see him come out. He loves martial arts and MMA.
My favourite podcast at the moment is “Betwixt the sheets, the history of sex, scandal and society”. The name is pretty self explanatory. Topics include the history of sex toys, the sex lives of presidents, the history of witch burnings, grisly deaths of kings and queens, why did men stop wearing heels?, the history of boob jobs, etc.
I don’t have kids, but I enjoy Childish which is a parenting podcast with Alison Rosen and Greg Fitzsimmons. They touch on parenting, but it’s more of a funny, raunchy chat between friends.
The Clark Howard Podcast is good for falling to sleep too.
If you’re looking for documentaries, CBC’s Ideas and BBC Radio 4’s Seriously are both good.
Joe Rogan recently did an interview with Marc Andreessen and it is really weird. It reminded me of your comment. Joe Rogan was totally clueless while Marc really went off the reserve and if there are people that believed that episode it did a lot of harm.
