USA Men's Soccer Thread

Horvath is better distributing the ball than Steffen, so I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Hoping for that.

The penalty against the US was even weaker.

I think we are better than Mexico. 1st half was garbage, but 2nd half was decent. It’s frustrating because it seems like we should be so much better but at the end of the day we beat Mexico in a competitive match and did not look good doing it.

Given the fact that our team is so much younger than Mexico maybe this is the beginning of taking back the bragging rights we had in the 00’s.

Gold Cup Final PRE-SALE tickets available in two minutes. Gonna check the prices (which will likely be too high), and even though it is Vegas, it is also August.

How do I get a passcode? Can’t be that difficult.
Secondary market (TicketSMARTER) already offering tickets from $134 to $6300.

Easy friendly win v Costa Rica.
I was reading ESPN, and it sounded as if Pulisic is taking the summer off. I’ll paste it in a bit.

THE OCTOGON has been released:
Three matches each of four International Break, three in November.

Notable in this article:

USMNT manager Gregg Berhalter has said he would call up mostly Major League Soccer players for the Gold Cup, allowing Europe-based stars such as Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie to skip the tournament ahead of their club seasons. Those players are expected to be back in the mix for the start of the World Cup qualifying schedule.

So, second place would be a success for the USA.

Fine by me. We treated the Nations Cup like a full tournament, one per summer is good enough for me. Get some rest for the club seasons and qualifiers.

Agreed. COVID squished it all together.

Here is my proposal for International Calendar Stuff:
World Cup in “4 Mod 2” summers (Qatar’s bribery notwithstanding). Qualifiers in “4 Mod 0/1” and “4 Mod 1/2” Seasons.
Nations League in “4 Mod 2/3” seasons, culminating in a Nations Leagues’ winners’ tourney (eight teams) that summer.
All Confederation Cups in “4 Mod 0” summers. All of them. No need for biennial tournaments. Figure out qualifiers during Nations League competition plus playoffs.

New Away kits! I’m meh about it.

So, when the opposing home team is in white, they can wear these. For any home team that traditionally wears red or blue at home, USA would wear their white home uni’s I guess.
It’s in the Laws, after all, that opposing teams (and keepers, and refs) wear distinguishing kits.

From the article:

Nike says the jersey, which is inspired by a waving flag, is made from at least 75% recycled polyester and attempts to mimic the on-pitch energy of the iconic U.S. men’s and women’s national teams. The USWNT will debut the kit on Wednesday night when they take on Nigeria in Austin, Texas

Uh, which flag? Guessing white was not a choice, because of above.
And the USMNT seems to be confused about where to wear the away jersey.

Agree with ‘meh’. Thought they looked fine on the field last night. Neither exciting nor disgusting.

Another ruling for Olivia Moultrie:

Wondering if the NWSL owners will decide to collude and have all of them refuse to offer a contract.

Gals heading off the Olympics later this month, while a Mens’ B-Team is starting Gold Cup this weekend.
Group Stage matches are 7/11, 7/15, 7/18. Quarters, assuming winning the group will be 7/25 against likely Costa Rica or Jamaica. Semis on 7/29 versus someone, likely Honduras or Panama. Then, finals 8/1 in Vegas vs likely Mexico.
FoxSports will be telecasting these, along with UniVision for the S&M crowd. (“Oh, great; Spaniards and Mexicans.”)

Meanwhile, TimberGals have signed this Moultrie teen.

I learned today that Qatar is in the Gold Cup this year.

Me too!
They were supposed to be in the Copa America. With Australia, but both pulled out because of Asian WC Qualifiers rescheduled to June 2021.

Curacao has Covid issues. Scheduled to play in Group A tomorrow, but may be out depending on testing coming back today.

Gold Cup getting Concacaffy before it even starts.

US win 1-0 vs Haiti. Sloppy game, Haiti had their chances. It’s our B team, so any win vs. a full side CONCACAF opponent is probably fine…(thought Haiti had some players out with COVID).

I don’t know how much we can learn from this tournament, but there are certainly some players who will be fighting for a roster spot this WC cycle (Acosta, Lletget, Dike, Hoppe, Yuiell, Cannon, etc)

Yuck. Maybe we should have had another goal, but I would hope that our team of MLS “All Stars” could beat Haiti comfortably instead of having to clear the ball out of the box in the final minute to avoid a draw.

IMO our best player was Shaq Moore (who plays in them 2nd division in Spain). I never want to see Yuiell again for the MNT.

The US went back to their scoring plan of hitting the ball hard of Zardes and it will either deflect into the goal or to another player for an open net.

Curacao gets booted for Covid. Replaced the day before their game by Guatemala.
Alphonso Davies taps out over the weekend due to injury
Hirving Lazano gets KTFO and is done for the tournament
Mexico ties T&T 0-0 after having 83% possession and taking 30 shots
Haiti had 5 positive Covid tests late last week, but no more positives the day before the game

Concacaf!!!

Horvath to Nottingham Forest.

He needs playing time. Good opportunity for him. Probably my preferred starter right now. I’ve seen him come up huge for Brugge over the years.

Anyway, nice win for the US 6-1 vs Martinique. Dike is the man. He should be a major figure/starter for our full A team.

Only saw part of the match last night. First look at Busio. Didn’t see anything to turn me off.
