USA Men's Soccer Thread

Hoppe rumors have been NEW or ARS or EVE. Most of it is old news, though. Should have been done by now. Schalke probably not playing him for fear of injury (and thus lowering his value).

Also there is a lack of central mids. I assume there are a couple of the attackers that will be deployed centrally. Gio? Aaronson?

From what I can gather, home qualifiers & Mexico game at Azteca will be on ESPN/Fox. The 6 other road qualifiers will be on Paramount+.

I guess I will be signing up for $50/year. And Paramount+ also has all UEFA Champions/Europa League games too.

The first game at El Salvador is on CBS Sports Network I believe. After that it’s just Paramount+ for those road games

It’s possible that CBS Sports Network will show a replay later that day. I can wait.

No Pulisic for the match in El Salvador. Should be no big deal for us, but … it’s the road in CONCACAF, where you take nothing for granted.

Hey, I have that one! Was planning on cancelling it at some point, but looks like I’ll keep it around longer now.

Zach Steffen (back spasms) not going to El Salvador. Matt Turner will start.

Pregame WCQ reading on the US getting Concacaffy

Apparently we’re going to try and do the full “we’re on the road in CONCACAF and have no idea what to do” experience tonight.

Is there any other confederation in the world where the fans semi-regularly throw shit [sometimes, literally] at the opposition taking a corner, and it’s tolerated by the confederation?

Given the results of the two games complete and the other game currently in progress, getting out of here with a draw would be fine. Getting out of here with 3 points would be super. Getting out of here with 0 points would be … well, all the ghosts of 2018 would be back along with all their friends they could find.

:yellow_square: [since we don’t have a yellow card emoji] for McKennie and Yedlin.

0-0. Well, it’s a point. Could be worse. Could be better, too. Gonna need a win and a draw before everyone goes back to their clubs to feel like it’s a decent start to qualifying. We go DLD to open things up and it’s going to be full-on panic again.

I’ll take a point in most of these guys first appearance in a Central American WCQ venue.

Need to finish. Had a few very good chances on headers that need to be buried. Never thought the El Salvador really threatened. We won the xGoals 1.68-0.29, but need to finish.

I am not happy with the performance. We had a few decent chances but never looked threatening either. El Salvador is a team we need to beat every time we play them. I know WQF is hard, but there is a huge difference in talent. It mostly came down to game play and coaching. I suppose player composure was part of it too.

Perhaps El Salvador has improved a lot. Having 25% of your team as Americans helps that.

The 12 year old was having a hard time grasping why 1 Roldan played for USA and 1 Roldan played for SLV.

5 points is a reasonable goal for two away, one home match.

9 points was a bit outlandish, though possible and certainly preferable, 'cause math.

So, currently seventh due to fair-play negative points, so if there were no more qualification matches, we’d be out of the WC yet again. But essentially a four-way tie for fourth on goal differential, and a six-way tie for second if you ignore those at this point in the tournament.

Something is apparently up with McKennie. Berhalter will address after the match, but I’m guessing he broke COVID protocol. Sigh. Why can’t we have nice things?

Steffen, Z. (COVID, out for this window)
