US Car Insurance Folks...how is this legal

I assume that in general less driving is better than more driving. But if you’ve already got a hard braking event then more driving might show that it’s an isolated thing.

Honestly not sure though.

Any auto folks here available to help us game the system?

Maybe we should select a relative life value of the squirrel and balance that against the different accident expected outcomes? Ofc if we assume the squirrel is worth 0 it’s almost always worth killing him! /squirrel

Better safe than sorry. Kill the squirrel. Accelerate if needed. :dog:

Typical that an entrenched interest like man’s supposed best friend would be advocating for the status quo!

I think the folks who know things have to keep quiet.

I suspect, but don’t actually know, that the answer to the question of whether any benefit of more driving to dilute a single hard braking incident would offset the penalty of additional mileage will vary by company, and perhaps by the kind and time of the additional driving.

For example, you probably don’t want to take a leisurely drive every night at 3am to dilute the effects of not running over kids and squirrels during the day.

When and where you drive can and will be used against you…

Yeah… living in a place where every 3rd car is a tesla doesn’t help

Not directly related…

but when I was renewing my policy, the agent asked me if I wanted to add accident forgiveness, and I was like… no. Why would I choose to increase my premium so that my premium didn’t increase if I have an accident? It makes absolutely no sense.

I’m astoun

If you are in a program with only a “collection period” that doesn’t persist throughout your policy term, it’s best if you can drive as safely as possible, the minimum amount that you’re required to drive.

If they track you for 1 month and require at least 5 trips, take 5 gentle trips for a couple miles around the 25 mph neighborhood at 22 mph at a non-rush, non-nighttime hour, then park at home and wait for the collection period to expire.

This doesn’t contemplate already having a hard brake - I can’t say what to do then.
