I.guess my point was that tariffs do what he wants but hes going to pay throught the nose for it for the next 15-20 years. It may be obvious but doubt they thought that far ahead.
Trump will probably be dead by then so he won’t care…
A lot of this stuff boils down to talking points that sound good on paper (and as a soundbite), but when you start asking for details it falls apart fairly quickly.
In normal conversation you never get that far because if you do ask for details the person is very likely to respond either defensively, or with even more talking points (this is amplified in the US because of right wing media. In Canada, you can still have a conversation about these things with the opposing political side)
It is very energy draining to have to do this in day to day interactions, so its just easier to avoid alltogether. I went through the exact same issues with Brexit and I just got fed up with it.
The telegraph over here in the UK has now picked up the oil and energy threat that Canada could weaponise if Trump decides to up the ante further.
Here are the consequences of Trump’s actions:
I already boycott that stuff (I don’t drink)
And not sure how long Canadians can survive on just Canadian bacon
We have maple syrup and pancakes to go with it.
Does anybody have a list of products to deprioritize to limit purchases from red states?
Obviously the US is very intertwined, but if I can limit purchases of things made specifically in Texas for example, I’m happy to.
Dr Pepper
I think I covered this in another thread, but one of the main drivers of how a country becomes wealthier over time is that they export their excess production.
The US has made big inroads abroad exporting their products and services. This was very expensive and took a long time.
Trump is going to damage this.
And when you damage those exports, the US economy will contract, and you will have less wealth.
So there is no real winning here.
More people voted for Harris in Texas than did so in New York
I’m currently reading Why Nations Fail, which points out that in the history of the world one really big driver of nations either failing or at least not doing as well as they could is extractive institutions. Having a large and widening wealth gap is not good for a country over time. And it certainly seems the Elon show is very likely to exacerbate this.
…at least until the Québec maple syrup mafia says otherwise.
Is that a cultural thing that needs to be protected?
Asking for a friend.
They have a Cartel there that would make DeBeers blush.

Freedom Toast!
Ontario maple syrup is just as good and there is no cartel in Ontario. The Amish lad who bought my farm will make good use of our maple trees.
Pure62 is typical of the maple syrup operations where I grew up. Bought a bottle of their stuff on our last visit but not as good as what my dad and I used to make.
It’s right up there with Wisconsin maple syrup (which actually is very good).
