Trump Tariff Watch

Any chance that California gets a Republican governor in its next gubernatorial election? Any former B-movie actors that might run as Republicans?

Anything is possible but I’d say right now CA getting a Republican governor is about as likely as Texas getting a Democratic one. Democrats have been +14 or better in every Gov election since Arnold won in 2006. And a Republican hasn’t won a Senate seat since 1988.

There are pockets where Republicans hold sway in CA but statewide it’s heavily democratic.

It’s possible that a non-MAGGOT GOP person could become CA governor. but it might have to happen during a recall when the political parties are less involved. Even the CA GOP is infested.

I always figured if California elected Reagan as its Governor and Nixon as a Senator anything was possible for the GOP there! Attitudes can change!

Texas was a Democratic strong hold and California was a Republican stronghold, but that was a long time a ago.

DTFN is likely right about some major screw up like Gray Davis with the Enron energy fiasco being the best chance for the Republicans near term in CA but even with the COVID recall Newsom survived that pretty easy. Of course I think the Rs ran some clown in that recall so that didn’t really help them much.

“Was” is the operative word. Most the highly elected Rs have been less conservative than the current wave of MAGA-HAT (“H” is silent) wearers. Wilson, um… Wilson…
Honestly, go 100 miles north or east from LA, and you’ll see the false idols on flags. (Exclude Palm Springs, which remains a gay paradise.) Heck, go to The OC to find some serious idiots.

And, if T-rump can get that money-wasting HSR stopped in central CA, good. HSR to Vegas a damned good idea, though still likely a money-loser (thus, tax-money-waster).
I’ve said this before, but I am not against HSR in general. I’m against spending so damned much for it. AND, starting in the middle of nowhere instead of one of the highly populated endpoints! Shit, do you want people to ride on it ASAP or what?? From Bakersfield to Fresno? “Nobody goes to Fresno anymore.”

Took the bus from Vegas to LA once as it seemed silly to fly such a short distance. Longish bus ride but nice distance for HSR. HSR should have a gazillion riders on that route and take a lot of drivers off the road and decrease air traffic.

I don’t really mind the drive and with two cheapskates (wife is one), it’s worth it (convenient while in Vegas, too: can leave Vegas whenever you want, can drive around in Vegas anywhere you want, etc.), but at one time in my more manic poker years I did consider the bus. There is one at night with zero stops. Would get there at 6AM after leaving at 12:50AM. Was like $20. (Gas would cost more, I think.) Now it is $44. For one person, not bad. Get to sleep instead of drive, be ready for a day of poker then leave. But need to get around once there. Greyhound bus stop is downtown and only a little poker there. Better tables on The Strip.

Should have run a B clown.

The open primaries also make it difficult for Rs in statewide CA races.

So much for Canada trying to help California fight its forest fires.

Wasn’t Elmo supposed to be looking into more efficient government? And here we are with a new government department…

Someone needs to inform him on how the US Govt actually works.

So, a separate External Revenue Service in charge of collecting trade-related Trump taxes from American companies?

While the IRS is already severely underfunded?

The excise and customs duty part of the irs already does this right?

Of course.
So the monies can siphoned off to billionaires who suck his dick, so to speak, instead of being used to lower the deficit or to help American companies compete or whatever other Political Cause he thinks up while on the shitter.

How Is U.S. Tariff Policy Administered?
The Secretary of the Treasury is charged with establishing
regulations on the collection of tariffs and U.S. Customs
and Border Protection (CBP) administers those regulations
at U.S. ports of entry.
When a good enters a U.S. port of entry, merchandise is
classified and tariffs are assessed using the Harmonized
Tariff Schedule of the United States (HTSUS), a
compendium of tariff rates based on a globally standardized
nomenclature. Today, importers self-classify and declare
the value or quantity of their goods. CBP reviews the
paperwork, performs occasional audits, and then collects
any applicable tariffs or penalties as well as any
administrative fees. Finally, CBP deposits any revenue
from tariffs or other penalties into the General Fund of the
United States.

Yeah, so some entity already does this. T-rump thinks he is creating the first tariff in history and thus needs something to administer it.

The CBP is a failing, corrupt organization, run by a low energy department head. Trump will appoint a new leader to drain that swamp and MAKE TARIFFS GREAT AGAIN.

Please make your checks payable to this new leader.

Having a trade deficit with the world isn’t necessarily a problem. Sometimes you need it for the supply chain. Imagine a firm needing critical inputs from various countries in order to create a product that has high value. You are gaining a lot by having these arrangements. That being said, you also need to do risk management and understand that relying on unstable partners for critical parts of the supply chain is suicidal. But Canada is very stable and reliable partner.
