Well in the west San Diego, LA, SF, Portland and Seattle all have beautiful trees.

If I could go back in time and make someone’s dad pull out so they were never born, Newt Gingrich would be a top contender. It does seem like he’s a main reason that especially Congressional politics became so tribalized and polar.
While Newt headlined and championed the change in political culture, I suspect that if Newt’s dad had worn a condom at the right time, there still would have been some other politician that filled that role.
The change in American political culture didn’t happen because of Newt. I think it’s a broader artifact of the interaction among human nature, media deregulation, and technological developments.
True. One of the consequences (good, bad, or ugly) of antisocial media is that fringe voices that polite society used to be able to just ignore suddenly got megaphones, and then followings.
Rush Limbaugh and conservative talk radio? Social media is just a different format for them now.
The left uses social media, so maybe that is new, but they don’t seem very effective at it. My bad take on that is fringe on the right is just more appealing, or have found a recipe that works. But that could all go back to RL.
Outrage and making shit up draws more interaction than being reasonable.
Eta: interaction drives how broadly stuff gets shared/promoted on social media.

^This. Emotional reactions of anger and fear grab more engagement than anything else.
Kind of like the recent brain dead trend of “rage bait” videos, but in commentary form (those videos that are like, “my grandpa taught me how to boil the perfect steak” 
said no one ever)
Add to that mix the underlying algorithm of many social media platforms to generate echo-chambers.
“OH! You liked that post? Here, let me pipe 160 more just like it your way.”

Yep.
I look at one WNBA video of Caitlin Clarke arguing a call and then I get 50 videos of controversial plays in the WNBA and how everyone is mean to Caitlin Clarke and its racism against her.
