I’m wondering if a key difference between Canada and the U.S. is we seem to be better at creating arms length structures than the U.S. does.
At this point, I have no clue which thread to put this in, so I’m putting it here.
Trump’s saber-rattling scored him another appearance of a victory.
So much winning until Canada starts cooperating more with China.
That reminds me of this West Wing episode:
After stating the above stat, Josh likes to repeat this line throughout: “68% say we spend too much on foreign aid. 59% want foreign aid cut.”
Looks like the UC system is now getting sued for AA
Yeah, my recollection is that two or three decades ago, maybe during Schwarzenegger’s governorship although I wouldn’t swear to that, California passed something at the state level that essentially required colleges (can’t remember if just public or if it also applied to private) to be completely race-blind in admissions. No preference for Black & Hispanic applicants over White & Asian applicants in order to achieve a more representative student body. Strictly individual merit. White and particularly Asian acceptance rates went up and Black & Hispanic acceptance rates went down.
If University of California violated that I could see it being a problem.
Ridiculous
USPS has suspended inbound parcel service from China and Hong Kong, per Bogage at WaPo
Is this a result of the suspension of the sub $800 duty free exception?
Even Democratic insiders are advising not to fight the USAID elimination
https://www.politico.com/news/magazine/2025/02/04/democrats-foreign-aid-trap-trump-00202447
This is so sad, as USAID does so much life saving work for a pittance of the federal budget. It’s a major source of goodwill and US soft power around the world. It’s a drop in the bucket in terms of the budget deficit. However it polls well with the misinformed that think we are sending out a huge chunk of our budget overseas.
The news releases about life saving aid continuing are false. It’s basically all stopped. We’ll spend a multiple of that now buying out the crypto bros for an alleged strategic reserve.
China and Russia are cheering this.
Very likely. They now have to check every parcel as the deminimis exemption of $800 does not apply.
I think the next two years are going to see much more of this type of thing.
The are trying to destroy as much as they can before the mid-terms, which is when they will very likely lose their complete grip on legislative power, which they are very unlikely to ever have again. At that point, the damage they caused becomes a fait accompli and they can benefit from this going forwards.
Musk himself is following that logic
Holy FLICK! This list didn’t get burned into my memory? Must have been in a pension exam.
CNBC is saying the USPS has de-suspended inbound parcel service.
Saw that as well.
I don’t think they have the capacity to check that many parcels so soon.
Will take some time to increase that I would imagine.
Guessing the orders of Trump bibles got halted, can’t have that.
Honestly, if I was thinking how as President I would most efficiently break America, this would be how it would go.
Immediately trying to wield the military to execute Biden would backfire.
Threatening our allies, leaving our treaties and our UN Council seats, breaking our trade agreements, negotiating for favorable Russian outcomes to the war, putting our troops into a Middle Eastern genocide, ruining our global goodwill… that’s how you’d do it.
My company removed all mention of DEI from its website this week.
On our internal website, it’s all still there (for now) but it’s relabeled and hidden away. I am highly discouraged about this, but hope that it’s just cowardly pandering and not actual policy change. I have the receipts of what we had on our DEI site before and how they proved the business justification for why it works.
An article was published in our local paper about the change, so people are becoming aware, and it’s not well-received.
