I remember when Pluto was just a pup (we used to call corn dogs “Pluto Pups” in Australia).
Edit: In France corn dogs are called “beignet de saucisse” - that’s pretty cool.
It wasn’t so much a vote “about science” as it was a vote about how to define a word. They probably didn’t come up with the best option.
It’s hard to come up with a definition that includes Pluto but doesn’t include several other objects in the solar system. Unless you define the word planet as “the things that were considered planets when I was a kid”. That doesn’t help when dealing with the exoplanets they are discovering though.
Basically, if we want a more objective definition, we either get 8 planets or several dozen.
The problem was that they came up with a definition at all. If you don’t formally define it, you can include Pluto and exclude everything else. Think outside the box!

Pluto could both be a planet and not be a planet. It’s the Tromey integer of planets.

Eris has greater mass than Pluto.
It’s a shame about the Eris name, however. It’s working name before it was classified and they knew what naming convention to use was Xena.
And Pluto was always one of the lesser dog stars.

At least it tried to orbit the Sun in the proper manner. But, it saw some butterflies over there, and look what happened.
Pluto has greater size (ie volume) than Eris has.
