Presbyopia comes from the same root as Presbyterian. The Presby part meaning “old men” because Presbyterians are governed by the elders of the church. And Presbyopia is “old men eyesight.”

> **Presbyopia**
>
> Makes it difficult to see things up close. This condition occurs when the eye’s lens hardens and the focusing muscle weakens, making it harder to focus on nearby objects. Presbyopia typically develops around age 40.

Farmers use GPS. Unfortunately, solar storms affect their GPS’es:

TIL about the California cooler:

> **[California cooler (cabinet)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_cooler_(cabinet))**
>
> A California cooler, also known as a cooler cabinet, is a type of cabinet used for the cool storage of food items that was popular in the western United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The California cooler is constructed simply as an interior cabinet with slatted or screened shelves. Vents near the top and bottom allow outside air to circulate by the principle of natural convection. This results in convective cooling, which keeps perishable food items fresh. Yeah, the sum of the first 9 natural numbers is 45 and 45^2 = 2025 and that is also the sum of the cubes of the first 9 natural numbers. 🙂

The building and the zoo itself celebrate their sesquicentennial this year.

Nice claim to fame. Up until now, the only thing I’d ever heard about the zoo was that it housed the last known passenger pigeon and the last known Carolina parakeet.

I looked it up to make sure I didn’t remember wrong, and learned this interesting extinction fact - after the pigeon went extinct in its cage at the Cincinnati zoo, they moved the parakeet into that same cage. So two species went extinct in that same cage.

Wow, that’s sad.

They’re one of the better zoos out there. The Cincinnati Bengals derived their name from the Bengal tigers recently (then) acquired by the zoo.

They’re also known for having to shoot their silverback gorilla, Harambe, after a kid got into the enclosure.

And more happily for miraculously saving the life of Fiona, an _extremely_ premature baby hippo turned social media star.
