This is not a snake
Summary
I saw this lovely critter working hard to devour a cicada. When I got home, I googled a list of snakes in the state. I saw no pictures that resemble this animal. Then the thought occurred to me: perhaps this is not a snake. I immediately found the answer.
Summary
It is an Eastern Glass Lizard, a species of legless lizards.

At the risk of asking a really stupid question… what exactly is the difference between a snake and a legless lizard?
Other than no legs, this critter has features more in common with lizards than snakes on the evolutionary tree. It has earholes and eyelids (snakes do not). It can’t unhinge it’s jaw like a snake can to eat larger prey.

This is 2024, and we have to be more evolved as a civilization than we have been in the past. It can decide for itself if it wants to be called a snake or a legless lizard, whatever it self-identifies as.
