The Value of Sending Your Kids to College

Actually, scratch that. University of Texas not being up near the top is the biggest surprise. I thought they were in Harvard territory. (Although obviously a MUCH bigger school so it doesn’t stretch as far.)

Hmmm, Google tells me that University of Texas’s endowment is $45 billion, so something is wrong with Poly’s list. My first guess was that it separated public & private but there’s public schools on there. Maybe they’re splitting up Texas by the different campuses???

There is no way Texas A&M is at Harvard level of endowment. $45B seems awfully high.

From 2022 to 2024 you would see a big increase in size of endowment funds (based on S&P 500 etc) but not to that extent.

Oh good Lord… for your own safety don’t ever set foot in the state of Texas until you learn the difference!!!

Texas has oil money, and the whole system is at $45 billion. Texas A&M is different.

Wikipedia separates it by private and public, has slightly different numbers. They also have endowment / student rankings:

Oh, UT won’t do well on a per student basis. They have more than double the students of Harvard, but a similar amount of money it seems.

Vanderbilt started with a $1 million endowment in 1873. Emory benefitted a lot from Coca-Cola money IIRC. Not surprising they have large endowments.

Exactly… look who Vanderbilt is named after!

Exactly. I didn’t realize that they had a bigger endowment than Harvard until 1986. It’s apparently something of a point of pride with the school to retake the top spot as having the largest endowment. They are hoping that their investments in oil will outperform Harvard’s in green energy so they can be largest again.

Phrasing!!

Or,
Freudian compensation?

Doesn’t explain why UT is not on Poly’s list of largest endowments.

Hahaha… I’ll let you argue that point with the folks in Austin. Let me know how it goes.

I mean, their mascot: Longhorns?? Not very subtle if you ask me.

I assume it is a system vs individual school thing. The UC system also has a large enough endowment to be in the middle of the list, but it is also for the entire system instead of 1 school.

I think its analogous to the UC-System. Its not just one College but several.

Yeah that must be it.

I didn’t realize how large some of the non-Austin campuses of UT actually are… I just think of UT as being in Austin with some minor satellite campuses but that’s not really accurate. Austin is the biggest UT campus but it’s only about a quarter of the total (a little less), which I hadn’t realized. TIL.

I used the University of Toronto abbreviation deliberately to confuse the Americans on the thread. Everyone on this side of the border calls it U of T, of course.

And yet university of Waterloo is uw, not u of w.

UK only really has two large endowment funds.

Oxford has £4.3bn and Cambridge £6bn

The next one (Edinburgh) is a minnow by comparison (£300mn)

Federal student loans will now be 6.53%

At the margins, I think that those increases will drive people to go the 2Y CC route first (no debt), and then do the last 2Y at University (borrowing as little as possible).

Something has to give though as current student debts are crippling for many.
