I have a question, what makes today’s adherents to the manosphere a unique crisis? There have always been men who wound up on the bottom rungs of society. Back in the day, you had filthy flophouses and tenements full of men who were one step away from homeless, destined to die single. Was there widespread mysogyny on top of that? Yeah, probably. So what makes today’s situation a crisis and what separates it from the past? ---

That’s nonsense. Companies that make dangerous products that kill people are held responsible…except social media companies. We are just at the early stages of understanding how dangerous they can be. You may understand this, or more accurately you simply chosen to never sign up and actually don’t understand it at all. The average American? They will cave in just like they have with tobacco, alcohol, and all the other things being sold to them with warning labels. ---

I think that’s a very revisionist view of history. First world people, including men, have never had as much access to mental health services as they do right now. There are even attempts to reach these men through social media to let them know that they don’t have to struggle alone. There are non profits and companies and movements being built around this problem. The resources do exist. But what many of these people WANT is to avoid any accountability. Therapy is for losers, the real problem is women who won’t look at them. You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make an incel look in the mirror. ---

Never said I have a solution. I think acknowledging a problem is step 1. That’s where we seem to be at right now. Well, MAGA acknowledges there is a problem but I don’t really like their solution, so I am hoping maybe democrats can catch on and come up with an alternative. ---

The existence of resources is good, but are they effective? Do they need better funding? Maybe we are catching up to the problem still? Things won’t be fixed overnight. If that doesn’t fix the problem, is that it? Id think what is at stake is letting MAGA continue to speak for that group and what happens next. Blaming the men for their situation will push more of them that direction. ---

Maybe there isn’t a “masculinity” “problem.” Could be more that in order to get what they want (power), a problem is claimed with the solution that gives the creators what they want. Real problem is that a lot of people are stupid and gullible and lazy and, thus, exploitable. Do we need the government to protect these people? Perhaps. It already does so in many instances. ---

Well, MAGA has defined the problem as a masculinity problem, and offer masculinity centric solutions. I don’t agree with that part. But i do think we have a growing societal problem with young men (Galloway offers some dark statistics to support this) that has been exploited by social media that we should take more seriously. It’s given Trump a lot of runway and power by offering a fix, even if that fix won’t accomplish anything. ---

I don’t think I have said anything here that would remotely imply something like that was even a consideration. I don’t have a solution. My only real point is that this feels like something we should take more seriously instead of just letting the problem fester more. I do appreciate that you pointed out more resources have been made available in the areas of mental health. I would suspect though, most of these isolated males are not suicidal or thinking they need help. They are simply looking for and finding extreme content online, because that is what gives them their dopamine for the day. ---

No, Scott Galloway is not correct. I’m in Australia for my daughter’s wedding. Meeting a wide range of young men here. I don’t detect anything like the masculinity problem here. So what is lacking in the US culture that is present here? It’s not social media, lord knows they have that here. It’s not “ independent women, my son in law will be doing the child rearing, and he and his mates are all good on that front. So what is so different? Affordability. Minimum wage here is $25/hour. Tipping is vertually non existent. Government provides HC, a base line pension, and free day care. Walking the neighborhoods of Melbourne and there are endless small businesses - cafes, bakeries, pubs, small specialty retailers. Hardly any chains. Seen exactly one MacDonalds in 3 weeks. See, those government baselines make it possible to live well without a job at a giant corporation. Young men are able to pursue their own dreams.housing is outrageously high to own. O property taxes make it a great place for landlords, great and small. The assets sell at top dollar. Affordability is best measured in terms of time. How long does one have to work to buy something. Assuming you can only work so much per week and stay sane, time is the ultimate constraint. Here, folks can live comfortably with 1 1/2 earners, and there is no expectation that you will pass on vacation days or stay late at the office. Big vibe shift from the US. That is all to say, US men are not happy and their future shows little promise.huge debts and virtually no assets.hell, they don’t even own their music collections- they rent it. What’s to be happy about? ---

If you think social media is a big part of the problem (that’s my view at least), a solution would likely involve some form of regulating that content, or at a minimum, funding the proper research into these trends and significantly increasing awareness of these outcomes. ---
