Bob Dole: DEAD!
Dole served in the United States House of Representatives from 1961 to 1969. Dole was also the Republican presidential nominee in the 1996 election and the vice presidential nominee in the 1976 election. He survived life threatening wounds serviing in the United States Army during World War II. He won election to the House of Representatives in 1960. In 1968, Dole was elected to the Senate, where he served as chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1971 to 1973 and chairman of the Senate Finance Committee from 1981 to 1985. He led the Senate Republicans from 1985 to his resignation in 1996, and served as Senate Majority Leader from 1985 to 1987 and from 1995 to 1996. President Gerald Ford chose Dole as his running mate in the 1976 election after Vice President Nelson Rockefeller withdrew from seeking a full term. Ford was defeated by Democrat Jimmy Carter in the general election. He ran for US President in the 1988 Republican primaries but was defeated by Vice President George H. W. Bush. Dole won the Republican nomination in 1996 and selected Jack Kemp as his running mate. The Republican ticket lost in the general election to Bill Clinton, making Dole the first unsuccessful major party nominee for both president and vice president. He resigned from the Senate during the 1996 campaign and did not seek public office again after the election. He died yesterday at age 98.

Tim Bilton: DEAD!
The Yorkshire chef gained fame on the BBC show The Great British Menu, becoming runner up in the North East heat in Series 5 (2010) and eliminated in the North East heat in Series 6 (2011). He worked at award winning Butchers Arms in Hepworth and appeared on a TV special, Christmas on the Farm, Cannon Hall Farms, this year. He died December 24 of cancer.

Harry Reid: DEAD!
Reid was a skilled amateur boxer, but was better known as a lawyer and politician. At age 28, Reid was elected to the Nevada Assembly and at age 30 became the youngest lieutenant governor in Nevada history as Gov. Mike O’Callaghan’s running mate in 1970. Elected to the U.S. House in 1982 and 1984 and to the U.S. Senate from 1986, Reid served in Congress longer than anyone else in Nevada history. In 1998 he held off Republican Rep. John Ensign by 428 votes after a recount that stretched into January.
After his election as Senate majority leader in 2007, Reid was credited with putting Nevada on the political map by pushing to move the state’s caucuses to February, at the start of presidential nominating season. That forced each national party to pour resources into a state which, while home to the country’s fastest growth over the past two decades, still only had six votes in the Electoral College. He led the Senate Democratic Caucus from 2005 to 2017 and was the Senate Majority Leader from 2007 to 2015, retiring in 2017 after an exercise accident. He died of pancreatic cancer today at age 82.

Betty White: DEAD!
White’s earliest work in entertainment came in 1930 when she was eight years old and appeared on an episode of a radio program called Empire Builders which was first broadcast on December 22 that year. In 1954 she hosted and Produced the Betty White show, which starred an African-American and led to threats of boycotts from southern states, which she ignored. She also had a female director, rare for that time. She appeared on game shows, at one point alongside husband Allen Ludden on Password. She became a regular on The Mary Tyler Moore show as the man hungry Happy Homemaker for Minneapolis’ fictional WJM TV. She also starred in Golden Girls and Hot in Cleveland, and made many more appearances on movies and TV, including a social media driven campaign to get her onto Saturday Night Live in 2010 at the age of 89. She died today at age 99
