Tax authorities chasing after me

For this context, would Sudbury count? They aren’t an actuary, but I do have a teammate there.

Or are we talking about someplace like Churchill…?

I’ve registered vehicles in 4 different states (3 blue and 1 purple on the political spectrum), CT is the only one that has charged property tax on it.

Several states now charge about $200 extra for EVs. I get it, road tax has historically been levied as a gas tax, and EVs don’t use gas but do use the roads.

Taxes in Kansas are fairly high. I pay about 25bp more income tax, more than double the property tax, plus more to tag my cars - relative to Denver. Not east coast bad, but pretty steep for the, uh, pleasure of living in flyover country. The overall COL is still cheaper than Colorado, but this is something I like to complain about.

Deep in Algonquin Park?

That would definitely suit an introvert.

Property tax for a car has got to be the stupidest thing I’ve read today.
Day ain’t over yet, though.

FWIW, Connecticut is running an experiment in collecting mileage data for use in a possible shift to taxing based on mileage.

I’m one of the test subjects. I have a device with a GPS receiver and (I assume) cellular transmitter plugged into my ODB2 port.

It’s tracking miles driven, states driven in (so taxes can be apportioned by state), and fuel consumed. Each month, I get a mock statement showing a mileage tax, offset by the implied fuel tax paid.

It’s an interesting idea, but political resistance in CT to mileage-based taxes, the privacy implications of this level of tracking, the costs of collecting the data over the cellular network, and competing uses of the ODB2 port seem likely to doom this to failure.

But they’ve got to do something as petrol/diesel taxes are an increasingly inefficient was to raise road maintenance funds.

And hey, I’m getting paid to let them track my car for this experiment.

Ill allow it.

Alqonquin park is for hippies and posers. Crown land is where its at. Why would i pay for dirty washrooms and crowds when i can camp for free in far nicer geography.

Where i camp and fish, for free, north of sudbury:

Was living in CT when I got my first Progressive Snapshot device. Drivers there are much better than most other states, so had no problem getting the full discount. When they gave me another snapshot for a different state, I switched companies since I was getting dinged for a lot of hard braking. Mileage was good too, since living close to work was very affordable.

North of Sudbury?

Damn, that is totally boonies. I have only been as far up as North Bay once (hockey game). Pretty much never went up there as I spent most of the time around Ottawa-Hull, and quite a bit around the Gatineau area in Quebec.

North of sudbury is remote, and yet it’s still barely northern ontario.

But, it’s nice. No people. very remote, lots of wilderness to wander in. Littered with logging trails everywhere to explore. Lake after lake after lake. No light polution at night.

Where we camp, we’re about an hour from the nearest cellphone signal. Which is a bit of a lie, because at mile marker 11 on the logging road, there’s a small hill where there’s reception for about 1 second (no exaggeration). You have no cell reception for a day or two, drive down the logging road, and boom, everyone’s cell phone goes off with ‘you have 89 new text messages’. And by the time you get them, there’s no reception again. Other than that, an hour to get cell.

Going up there for four days towards the end of september. Taking the tent, the dog, the boat, and two students lol. Gonna get some grouse.

Well . . . until you show up with your college students.

Theyre generally pretty quiet actually. Worst case they smoke some.pot and then get silent.

Except that one time two of them smoked up in the boat while fishimg. That was.a.riot.

Watch out for the no ON vehicle stickers, you still need to renew your registration (for free) or you could get dinged with a hefty ticket.

Just printed the letter to the collection agency, will send it out today. It’s actually not the state of CT that has the claim on me, but the town of West Hartford. Really a shame since I enjoyed living there.

Update on this - the collection agency didn’t bother to sign my certified letter and now they are sending another letter claiming that I never responded. Will call my cousin tomorrow and see what I should do.

How can they “not bother to sign” it? Isn’t that the only way it gets delivered?

You can send Certified Mail without a Return Receipt. In that case, it’s basically just verified that it was delivered or attempted to be.

Yes, that is the only way it gets delivered, but if they don’t sign it then it’s not delivered. I sent the certified mail as Rastlin described it, but is that good enough or should I try again?

How are you in contact with them at this point?

I’d just send them back the proof of it being sent, with a polite “Your problem, see attached”.

What did you ultimately send them again?

Have they shown you good proof of records for what you owe at this point?

If you have “I sent you a letter disputing it, here is the record that you received it”, then “please provide your proof of the alleged debt as I do not recognize it as valid.” I don’t see where they have to go from there. I suppose they can request another letter, but proceeding with collections at that point seems to be stacked against them.

I would go so far as, “If your agency has lost the letter that was certified as delivered, I will be happy to send another letter once I have received the cost of postage for the duplicate.”

I’m sure it won’t come to that, but I like throwing in jabs where I can.
