For predictive modeling, I found ISLR to be a fantastic resource. It has R coding too
I hear. I started watching those videos they are very long and boring.
Maybe I will consider it then. I do a lot more R and Python than SAS
SAS coding is different than R. But if you know R you can learn SAS. The problem with SAS, is that the official classes are really expensive. The tools are expensive. The only real benefit I see in SAS is that it has insane processing power.
Python maybe down in the future. I donât know any of it. Still have scars for my probability theory class which didnât teach anything in application it was all theory. So we had a theory section and then we were supposed to somehow figure out problems in python without anyone to teach us codingâŚ
I used to do a ton of SAS. Then I started to do less of it, and tons of R, and bits of Python. I like R best.
Python is often more compatible with DS infra, AWS, etc. (depending on your config).
I had this problem in my linear algebra class in college, which was 2/3 compsci majors. I was not one of them. But we kept getting coding assignments in matlab. I had no coding experience at the time.
Wooho just got the FCAS email. My vote counts now!
Oh snap lemme go check mine
Woooo itâs legit
Where is âhigher education informationâ in the profile?
And does the diploma come with a frame? I remember they had framing options. I have no idea where my ACAS diploma is, but my FCAS I intend to frame.
My ACAS one was just a piece of paper. I put it in a pretty basic black frame from amazon (similarly framed the passing confirmation for each of the examsâŚ). My parents got my college diploma in a nice, legit frame as a graduation present.. maybe see to do something similar for FCAS
I feel like the ACAS and FCAS certificates should be very large, like the ones that lawyers get for passing their bars. They look so cool
R and SQL arenât really exhangeable, though there is some overlap. SQL is typically used for data processing and R for statistical modeling. Lots of people have both in their normal modeling work flow.
I am aware. We were creating triangles and diagnostics with SQL, which were written in hundreds of lines of codes. That could have been rewritten in R in a few lines.
Yea, that ChainLadder package is very cool for that work.
What does this email say by the way? I donât seem to be receiving any emails from the CAS, something must be wrong my contact info over there. I never got the email saying exam results were up either.
" Dear New Fellow,
Congratulations, you are now welcomed to use the FCAS designation!
While we will be sending several informational emails over the next few weeks regarding your Fellowship, there are a few action items to address immediately as a new Fellow:
Please review and update your online CAS profile information, paying particular attention to:
- Mailing Address â confirm the address you want your FCAS certificate mailed to by making sure itâs marked âPrimaryâ.
- Email address â confirm your email address for all future correspondences; mark âPrimaryâ.
- Higher education information â confirm the college or university information you want included in the 2021 Annual Meeting program as part of your recognition as a new Fellow.
If your name has changed since you became a member, please email me regarding how you would like your name displayed on your FCAS certificate.
If you have any questions, feel free to email me at dgee@casact.org. Once again congratulations!

I assume this just means the âMy Degreesâ section on your profile
