So uh, do you guys think Trump will invade Greenland or what?

Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace, although it will always be predominant, but can now think about what is good and proper for the United States of America,” Trump wrote in the text, which was first reported by PBS.

Trump then repeated his ambition for the U.S. to take “complete and total control of Greenland” — an autonomous territory of Denmark — and he questioned the “ownership” of the territory by Denmark, a NATO ally.

Probably the death knell for CUSMA/USMCA

I wonder at what point the billionaires decide Trump’s costing them money vs. making them money. If the EU gets into a fight with the US, does this bring in the digital services tax and so on.

Are you assuming the billionaires are able to reign him in? If so, why haven’t they done so already?

Haven’t lost enough money yet

For billionaire response see Russia vs Ukraine

Europe should offer Trump Antarctica instead of Greenland, it’s way bigger.

So, this “Greenland by force” business was just his opening negotiation tactic?

It fits his style – push for something outrageous, and then you get what you want when they try to appease you.

Trump has a “deal”. US has had a free hand militarily with Greenland since WWII so it is probably just what is already in place but will be rebranded as HIS deal.

So Trump 2.0 just wants to put his name on as many things as possible.

FFS, can we just get it all out of the way and just do it with a washable sharpie?

“We have pretty much the concept of a deal” lol.

Kinda like Trump’s healthcare plan.

the only public comments from trump seem to focus on national security. but we have permanent right to have a huge base there if we want and could get more probably easily if we just asked for that instead of threatening annexation.

but no one seems to push this too hard (like we’d ever get a straight answer) or have I missed it? the need to have it for national security is laughably week when that security is available at our discretion now.

I think the “national security” that Trump is referring to is the access to acquiring the rare earth metals found in Greenland . . . which the current arrangement with Greenland/Denmark doesn’t cover.

These rare earth metals are needed for building/expanding current AI technologies (IIRC) . . . and there are some concerns around China/Russia being able to acquire it.

But ITA that the Donroe Doctrine is starting to smell a lot like McCarthyism.

Rare earth metals aren’t actually rare, just in case you wanted to dismantle another reason for Trump being Trump.

The opportunity to offshore negative environmental impacts is only a secondary benefit. The problem in the US is the cost of owning the mineral rights, or more precisely, the opportunity to capture the economic gains for self and allies is more restricted.

Trump will go down in history as “The Great Galvanizer”. Unfortunately only in countries other than the US.
