Related to this plot, a Sikh-Canadian promoting Khalistan was murdered here in Vancouver about 6 months ago. Trudeau accused Modi of Indian government involvement in the murder. India-Canada diplomatic relations have been crappy ever since. However Modi has been quieted a bit with the new American revelations.
India treading on thin ice.
This has ramped up on this side of the border with today’s disclosures by the RCMP. We have expelled each other’s senior diplomats.
This situation has now escalated as it has become clear that the Indian Government was deeply involved in the entire operation.
I don’t trust the Modi government at all. Trudeau being vilified for upsetting an ally but India is killing our citizens so a harsh response is warranted.
This type of nationalistic and diplomatic arrogance from a nation state who clearly got caught red-handed in a capital murder case…can IMHO be traced back to the fracturing of global norms (Putin, Trump, Xi, Modi, Bibi…they have all contributed).
When nation states don’t face any real consequences to these type of actions you get this sort of behavior.
Not sure its going to get better going forwards but Canada is right to be very angry.
My personal view is that we should be careful about trading with India as Modi is very much another Xi-type personality. I don’t see either country (India, China) as viable partners as long as those two are in power.
India so far has refused to cooperate in the Canadian investigation. BBC article below mentions that the US and the UK are now encouraging India to start cooperating.
** Following Monday’s allegations from Canadian officials, the UK and US urged India to co-operate with Canada’s legal process.
On Wednesday, the British Foreign Office said in a statement that it is in contact with Ottawa “about the serious developments outlined in the independent investigations in Canada”.
The UK has full confidence in Canada’s judicial system,” the statement added.
“The Government of India’s cooperation with Canada’s legal process is the right next step.”
The US, another close Canadian ally, said that India was not co-operating with Canadian authorities as the White House had hoped it would.
“We have made clear that the allegations are extremely serious and they need to be taken seriously and we want to see the government of India co-operate with Canada in its investigation," said spokesperson Matthew Miller at a US State Department briefing on Tuesday.**
