I feel that the main takeaway that most people will have was that including the journalist was the problem. But the bigger concern is that they are regularly using a non-secure (by military standards) app to send classified information, including when a recipient is in Russia.

Probably. Including the journalist was a horrible breach of security, but an accident.
Deliberately using an unsecure system for battle planning is much worse, as is intentionally evading open records requests by using disappearing messages.
This group of people is among the most high value targets for phone/computer hacking in the world, yet they are totally cavalier about no need for them to observe security protocols

Is Signal the new WhatsApp? I hadn’t heard of it before now. Trump 1.0 used WhatsApp regularly, didn’t they?
I read a while back these apps are more secure than your normal text messaging services, especially between Android and Apple platforms. Not that it excuses any of this.

They use Signal mostly because of the message auto-delete feature. That wasn’t something you used to be able to do on whatsapp.
End to end encryption is great.
If you have a dumbass on either end that can be spearfished, that’s what will happen.
This episode makes Trump look like the adult in the room.

I’m not sure about that. It just makes it seem like he is out of the loop. Who is in charge if Trump didn’t know anything about this plan? Or maybe he is just lying about that and just wants to pass the buck. Either way, not a good look.

Is it a big deal if Putin was watching this chat live? He is our greatest ally now according to the people in the chat.
I keep forgetting that Russia is now the President’s friend as everything else seems more like the 1950s.

What are the current excuses being given? The ones I have seen are:
CIA Director: Not sure if reporter was on chat, so apparently he hasn’t checked since the scandal broke? Is he pleading that he sucks at intelligence gathering?
Director of National Intelligence: No confidential material was disclosed. Possibly narrowed statement with prompting from Comer to say no confidential intelligence material, leaving open possibility of confidential military information being in the chat. Although even that narrower claim is suspect given that the identity of a CIA asset was disclosed in the chat.
National Security Advisor: He didn’t add the reporter, reporter must have hacked his way in. Even though one of those is easy to do and one is mind blowingly hard.
I haven’t seen anyone from the administration address the recent DoD memo reminding people not to use Signal, or address the fact that the existence of these conversations violates document preservation laws.
