Gardeners of GoA, what the hell is this? They are invasive, they seem to shoot runners out in all directions, they climb fences, and they grow pretty quickly. I’ve begun a combination of Roundup, tilling the roots, and just hacking some out, I don’t know if there’s a better method. This plant looks very much like **Campsis radicans** , commonly known as **Trumpet Vine** or **Trumpet Creeper**. The screenshot text gives it away perfectly, too: mentioning that it grows rapidly, climbs fences, and spreads in every direction is classic trumpet vine behavior. While it produces beautiful orange or red trumpet-shaped flowers that hummingbirds love, it is notoriously aggressive, sending out underground runners (rhizomes) and popping up everywhere. Here is a quick breakdown of what you’re dealing with and how to handle it: ### Why It’s Tough to Eliminate - **Deep Root Systems:** Simply cutting it down or hacking at it won’t stop it. The roots store massive amounts of energy and will just send up new shoots. - **Resilience to Herbicide:** It often laughs off a single, casual spray of standard weed killer. ### Eradication Strategies If you are trying to get rid of it (especially where it’s tucked into rocks like this), a multi-pronged approach is usually necessary: - **The “Cut and Paint” Method (Highly Recommended):** Instead of spraying the leaves blindly—which can easily drift onto plants you actually want to keep—cut the vine down close to the base. Immediately (within minutes) brush a concentrated glyphosate (like Roundup) or triclopyr herbicide directly onto the freshly cut stump. This forces the plant to draw the chemical down into its root system. - **Persistent Digging:** If you prefer to avoid chemicals, you have to dig out the root crown and as many of the lateral roots as physically possible. Because it’s growing out of rock crevices here, that might be incredibly difficult without breaking the roots—and any piece of root left behind can sprout a new plant. - **Smothering:** If it’s popping up in an open area, covering it with heavy-duty landscaping fabric or cardboard topped with thick mulch can starve it of light, though trumpet vine is aggressive enough that it might just travel out from under the edges. Expect to play a bit of whack-a-mole for a season or two. Every time a new shoot pops up, hack it back or treat it immediately to eventually starve out the root system. ---

Many thanks, I did find some pics that look like what we have. We also have a slightly different plant (the leaves are different) that also appears related. OK, I’ll have to see what chemical it is, I have been using a ‘stump and vine killer’ that I paint on the larger stumps I’ve cut, I’ll do more of that. I had wondered if smothering them might work, seems like a solid maybe. It also says digging, we are going to till down about 8", maybe that will stun them. Chemicals, then tilling, then cardboard, then we wait. ---
