Ramadan fasting

Ramadan Mubarak.

I’m not Muslim, but I’ve been trying to do single day fasts this month to get a better appreciation for the experience of practicing Muslims through Ramadan.

It’s been a struggle to get the morning food / water combo right. Lots of food sounds like a good idea, but then thirsty hits hard in a few hours.

Giving it my third attempt tomorrow. Second failed on water. First I ate before iftar because I wanted to eat with family and we tend to eat early these days (and also failed on water).

Good luck.

if you wake up before sunrise, you can drink then, should be easier. I keep meaning to do that before fasts (not Ramadan). Haven’t done it yet (there’s something about getting up before sunrise that doesn’t work out) but maybe next one

I’ve done several all-day no-food fasts. I can do that well. It’s the “no drinking anything” that I would seriously struggle with. Daughter has been performing Ramadan fasting for the past few weeks. I’ll call tonight to see how it’s going and if there’s any insights to offer.

If you follow any kind of intermittent fasting type diet, Ramadan is fairly similar.

I’m an idiot. Why did I think ramadan was in november? And now, it’s right now.
That explains why my one buddy and his wife have been a bit less responsive in the last couple of weeks.
Particularly when I’m trying to coordinate with them to plan a dinner at my place with a bunch of his friends from his mosque lol.

Lunar calendar year of 12 cycles, which is shorter by several weeks than a solar calendar. So the ninth month, Ramadan, can occur at any time during the Gregorian Calendar.
“Lunar.” Fun fact that has nothing to do with this thread: the word “loony” has the same etymology.

Got detained on the way to break fast. Hadn’t had anything to eat or drink all day and then the goons show up to disappear her.

The no water though was brutal.

Eid is Monday I believe, so you can wish them Eid Mubarak when you next reach out to schedule…

What are the rules? such as time frame, is anything allowed, can you gorge yourself just before sunrise, etc etc

I don’t know but you really don’t need to gorge yourself for a fast. As everyone says, it’s only the water that you miss. Chugging a lot of water right before sunrise seems advisable though.

so not even water is allowed?

From first light (about an hour before true dawn) to beginning of sunset, no food or drink including no water. Also no sex.

You can eat and drink whatever you want before or after. If you gorge on food for breakfast you end up thirsty soon after.

I felt very bloated after both meals. It was very uncomfortable in the evening. My headache didn’t really clear till mid morning the following day.
