Political truths that are worth sharing but aren’t funny

I’m am sure most Americans believe they live in the best country in the world. What Trump will never understand is that most Canadians also believe they live in the best country in the world and don’t want to be Americans. Nice to see our 91 year old ex-Prime Minister speaking out. Many truths here.

not so sure about that

I am really fascinated by the Canadian response to this whole thing. Most of other countries would be panicking because USA ruins countries.

Despite our differences, Canadians are united against becoming Americans. Trump has forced Canada into thinking about doing things we should have done fifty years ago: like working harder to develop trading relationships with other countries. We were too complacent in thinking that the US would always be our friend. There could be a positive outcome for Canada from all of this if we diminish our reliance on US trade.

Might be time to get your military up to the NATO 2% GDP threshold. And encourage your friends to do likewise. Particularly if the U.S. pulls out of NATO. Not that you’d really go to war with the U.S. … more akin to the Cold War arms race.

My take is different. If most countries move out of the orbit of USA and USA and Russia duke it out without proxies then Nato isn’t needed. There was an organisation called the Non-aligned Movement. Originally the term third world referred to that group of countries. Most of these countries in Nato could easily become non-aligned which is actually the smarter move. Don’t be asked to spend 2% of your gdp to fund a cold war you don’t.need to be part of.

Eh, speak softly and carry a big stick.

Noted. Have edited my earlier post by adding the word “most” in front of Americans and Canadians.

I think this will happen regardless. Interesting to note that it was a Conservative government in power here that oversaw a massive reduction in our military spending and it has gone up under the Liberals from its low.

The USA is driving us closer to China on trade matters. If we reduced our oil exports to the US by $100 billion and redirected that oil to Asia we would no longer have a trade surplus with the US.

:joy: that would probably make trump angry. I think he sees it as if you should buy more from us not less.

trump???

No, Canada.

I’d place us at least in the top 25  Probably wouldn’t be top 5.

But, what if we make it great again?

At some point Canada’s going to bring up northern defences. Defending the arctic is important for US security, and we’re basically in charge of that.
I expect when Trump starts going ballistic that Canadian politicians will have a few hole cards planned, that being one of them.
