Nearly every news site is now paywalled, thinking about getting a subscription to something. Any recommendations? I’d like something that is going to present a reasonably unbiased view. Not interested in a lot fluff pieces. Want good coverage of breaking events and decent statistical analysis of polling and election results.
My go-to had been subscriptions to both the NYT and the WSJ. They both have their biases in their headlines and what they choose to cover, but I had thought that between the two you could get a reasonably well-rounded view.
However, a bit over a month ago, I canceled my WSJ subscription, because with the increased costs I wasn’t certain I that the value-to-cost ratio made sense anymore, and because I keep telling myself that I ought to be pursuing a news diet per my cardiologist’s instructions to minimize stress.
I remember seeing someone say they had a prompt working on Gemini to pull non-paywalled news articles meeting certain criteria together for them each day, as part of balancing staying informed and a desire to reduce doomscrolling, etc. I mean to look into doing something like that at some point, both for that reason as well as part of my project to try to get caught up with effective use of AI tools.

ProPublica and The Guardian are still free, but ask every single time. The Guardian knows how many articles I’ve read in the last year.
The Guardian is not pay walled but they encourage you to make a modest donation to them. I am happy to do so as the quality is high and they cover the world better than any other paper I read. The US coverage is extensive. I have NY Times and Globe and Mail subscriptions but The Guardian is better.
I did make a donation to ProPublica last year.
I haven’t given the Guardian any money but might.
Latest polls continue to show low Trump popularity.
Trump-controlled polls can’t come soon enough for him.
If this had happened to a GOP rep this would be labeled domestic terrorism, and blame critics for inciting violence. I’m waiting for Stephen Miller or Trump to call this guy a true patriot.
So that’s 2 Democratic congresspersons that have been assaulted in less than 1 week.
The doomsday clock was advanced this week.
As an American I legitimately thought this was fake at first. Post-scarcity, benefiting the people?
Australia will offer at least three hours of free solar power every day to households including those without solar panels under an energy-saving programme that is expected to go live in 2026.
Users will get the free solar power when generation capacity is highest in the middle of the day. “People who are able to move electricity use into the zero-cost power period will benefit directly, whether they have solar panels or not and whether they own or rent, and the more people take up the offer and move their use, the greater the system benefits that lower costs for all electricity users will be,” Bowen said.
Well, “free”. No doubt subsidized by other charges (hopefully on those better able to afford them). Clever though — a big shift in usage patterns could significantly cut down on the amount of storage they need to build out and reduce storage-related energy losses.
Trump is bad for US defence industry as countries who were traditional buyers look elsewhere.
You knew who would be the headliner when you saw the headline.
I’ve seen ignorant comments that “only Americans” should play in the Superb Owl. Funny how there were no such complaints when The Rolling Stones, The Who, or Coldplay did halftime, yet they come out when an actual US citizen is playing.
Our kid (who grew up in a MAGA Christian household) had heard of Gabby Barrett, but not Gilbert or Brice.
Well - they can have fun, I guess.
I’ve heard of none of them beyond Kid Rock.
ETA: I guess he fits in with Trump’s America.
Reminds me of this

I know it’s well-intentioned, but there’s a long slippery slope of unintended, undesirable consequences.
