Political Stuff That Doesn't Fit In Other Threads But Aren't Worth Starting A New Thread For

I think you guys need to bring back SAT and ACT scores for admissions.

You just end up with worse students over time getting into College due to rampant HS grade inflation.

I saw this back in the US when I was a grad student, and was a TA in an Engineering Math class.

I have no idea how some of these kids were ever admitted into Engineering degrees (Nuclear, Civil, Chemical) because their math skills were abysmal.

Only some schools have abandoned them, due to supposed bias, which (IMO) comes more from the students’ culture being “biased” than the tests themselves.
I prefer that someone give a darned good explanation for their poor standardized scores in order to be admitted into the highest of learning institutions. Crap schools will still exist, as they have existed for at least X decades (same X as in my previous post).

I thought I heard once that SAT scores actually correlate well to grades in the first year of college.

They do.

The SAT is in many ways a stupid test that students with extra prep will do significantly better on, so a 1250 by an unprepared student is more impressive than a 1300 by a tutored student. But the gulf between students who score 1000 and 1400 is pretty meaningful and throwing it out entirely is a mistake.

The only way our PM can get face time with Trump is to invite himself to the December 4 World Cup draw.

Carney can congratulate Trump when he humbly accepts his FIFA Peace Prize.

Is that a woke belief in the first place?

But, but, I thought if I just picked the major, that the basic skills I completely lack would take care of themselves!

“Basic skills take care of themselves” still ranks as one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard about anything in my entire life so far. What makes it even better is that this nonsense was uttered by a professor of methods of teaching math!

I’m not comfortable making fun of a person’s name… but aren’t parents supposed to think about how the names of their kids might be… misused?

(The name and role are real.)

This kind of feels like a war crime, though I guess it doesn’t count as an official war. The U.S. decided to kill two helpless guys who were clinging to boat wreckage because Hesgeth didn’t want any survivors.

Even if not applicable due to the lack of an undeclared war, attacking survivors of a sunken ship is a breach of international maritime law.

Actually getting a trial, conviction, and imposing sentence for that is a bit of a problem.

Puts a lie to the “we’re attacking the cocaine” rationale.

At some point, illegal actions will receive some pushback. We’ll see how long this lasts.

In case you were wondering if anyone was keeping a list…

(I’m not certain that all of these are strictly illegal…e.g. the President has the power to issue pardons…)

Canada continues to pivot to other countries due to Trump’s economic war on it. In addition to building stronger ties with China and India, Canada has become the first non-European member of the EU’s SAFE defense procurement scheme. I would support an economic union with the EU.

Trump’s pardons do not extend to The Hague

Yeah, good luck forcing us to the Hague. We haven’t ratified the Rome Accords.
