Poker: Bad Beats, Scores, Stories, Hand Questions, Etc

I’ll have to look into that. I’m not sure how much $ I had in stars at the time, but I know I had a bunch in full tilt.

Played a 5 hour session @ 2/5 NL last night. Pretty wild, lots of stories.

Second hand of the session I’m in SB and call 15 with pocket 2s, flop quads. High hand for $400 is in effect and I make it on the board (first time ever for me) with about 55 minutes to go. It holds up until I hear “high hand” at the next table over with only 6 minutes left. They end up with quad 7s so I don’t get paid. Bummer, temporarily… I get pocket queens twice in the next round and 3-bet and get folds, then I get KK and 3-bet an open to about 80. Guy reraises to 200, I stack, he calls and board runs out clean as he mucks. So I’m already up about 800.

Running so hot it’s insane. Aces, jacks, 88 three separate times, sixes, threes that flop a set. Haven’t seen this many hands in forever. I’m up to about 1850 from my 500 buy-in. Go card-dead at this point for a while and lose about 200 when I 3-bet AQ and fire on a 3-6-8 flop. Guy pushes on a 7 turn and I have to fold. Then a few hands later the most interesting hand of the day happens…

I have ThTc on the button; EP raises to 20 and MP calls, I 3-bet to 90 and both call. Flop is Qh-9x-6h. I continue for 125 and both call. Turn is 8x, giving me a double gutter. Check/check, I deliberate for a minute and check also. I felt out of place in this spot… with 2 others in the pot, I have to imagine someone has a queen (or even a set). So I check as well hoping to hit my straight. River is a 7! … of hearts. Now EP bets 75 and MP stacks off for about 500 more. I begrudgingly fold.

I think I played the river correctly given the action. Would MP really push in with less than a flush here when both draws hit? Seems unlikely. In retrospect though (not trying to be results oriented, but whatever) if I bet heavy on the turn I’m thinking EP calls with what he has and MP folds, I hit the straight and take home a gigantic pot. Oh well. Would like to hear other thoughts if anyone has an opinion.

In any case, it’s about time to go so I rack up 1425 and a tidy profit.

I still haven’t found much about the payback. I think my neighbor is looking at 2012 articles.

I started Poker Stars with the free $50. I would periodically take $ out when I needed. IIRC I had maybe $1000 in it. At this point I do not care if I never get that back. I’ve made plenty of $ on a $0 investment.

I think if J10 doesn’t beat you I might call for the odds. But J10 could have hit his open ender on the flop and have you beat anyway. Feels like one of them has one of those two hands, so a reluctant fold feels right.

Had a nice night on Friday. Went to the local casino, played 1/2. In for $240.

Nothing super flashy, just played pretty tight aggressive and was able to steadily chip up. I don’t think I went all-in all night.

Guy to my right basically gave me all the money he was taking from the other players. When he was on the button, I believe he straddled 14 of 15 hands. And probably another 15 when he was not on the button. I wasn’t sure if it was a him thing, or that he thought he saw something in my play, but it was getting tiresome after a while. However, between when I sat down and when I left his stack went from about $600 to about $300, despite him taking several pots off other people, so I was fine with that.

There was one guy (early 30s, caucasian) who had a solid stack and played well. I bluffed him off at least top pair once, and what felt like top 2 pair another time. I convinced myself I wasn’t going to bluff him again until I’d at least shown down a solid hand against him, but he left before I could get there. The guy who replaced him (mid-50s, quiet, reserved, southeast asian) was also competent. We tangled in one pot when I had QQ and raised his blind in late position. Flop was AK4, he checks, so I do also. Turn is a T, he checks again, I bet something like 20 for the straight draw, he calls. River is a blank, he bets something like 55, I raise by a hundred hoping he will believe I’ve got the straight, but he calls and turns over AK. I think that was about the only big hand I lost more than I needed to at showdown.

One weird thing is that I won a hand which had lots of loose chips in it, and as I was sorting, I noticed 2 $25 chips in what I thought was an all-$5 pot. This can kind of happen because while the $1 chips are all white, and the $25 chips are all green, the $5 chips are red on two quadrants, green on one, and yellow on another. So if you’re not careful and you kind of mix things together, you could mistake the green edge of the $25 chip for the green portion of the $5 chip, and if it’s in the middle of a stack of 5 or 10 you might not notice it. I guess the player didn’t nor did the dealer, but by the time I realized it we were a couple of hands beyond and I don’t even know how I could have tried to correct the mistake.

Out for $825. Solid win.

Nice work.

Don’t take the straddles personally, I think sometimes people just like to gamble. Or, sometimes they think they have an edge in bigger pots if people are uncomfortable with the bigger bet sizes and pot sizes. Unlikely he was targeting you specifically, especially since you were on his left.

As for the 25s in the pot, this was most likely someone calling a bet with a bigger chip and the dealer making change. But yeah if that’s not the case it’s definitely not on you to audit the size of the pot after it’s shoved to you.

Losing session yesterday. Played 1/3 and I felt pretty good about my table, had a good idea of what everyone was doing. Sat with 320 and chipped up to about 500 or so before hitting a bad run of hands.

Hand 1 - a few limpers, MP raises to 20, I 3-bet to 75 with AK suited. He shoves for like 210 total so I call. No help on the flop, lose to KK.

Hand 2 - AT suited and raise to 20 over a few limpers - 2 callers. Flop is AKT all clubs; I bet about 50 and guy stacks off for 150. This guy was pretty face up so I suppose I could have folded the extra 100, but I called and of course he has the flush. No help on turn/river.

Hand 3 - AA on the button and raise to 20 over a few limpers (standard pattern, as you can see), get 2 callers. Flop is 9-8-3 rainbow and I shove my remaining 60ish. Guy re-shoves and I ask, did you flop a set. He nods and I’m busto as the board once again provides no help.

Easy come easy go. But it was a fun few hours as the table was super lively. I ended up winning most of it back in horse racing bets so overall it was an entertaining weekend of gambool.

daily freeroll tournament on ClubWPTGold. I haven’t played much there in the last couple of weeks; been taking a break from the site.

Played pretty solid all night. Didn’t get into pots with speculative hands (like 33 in on the button after a raise early position). Won a few flips, and this time (unlike many times previously) my getting it in good pre-flop didn’t get cracked.

Had JJ once, managed to win the pot even with a Q-high board cause he just had AT.

Kept going, kept going, kept going. I was in 1st place a few times, and was in top 10 when we hit the money at 50 entrants (out of >1,000).

Kept playing solid, just picking spots and managing to win them. Finally got down to the final table, even though I was in 7th place (of 8) then I felt like I was playing good and since we all had >20 BB, nothing to hurry about.

I think my favorite hand was when I had AdAh, and he had something like 8d9d. Flop was Q-high with 2 d, so I put him in and he called, and then the turn gave him a diamond for the flush that got beat when a 4th diamond came on the river.

Down to heads-up, I started with 2:1 chips, got up to 4:1, then we went back to even, then I won like 2 pots and when we were back at 2:1 again I had KsQc, there was a Q on the flop and I shoved, he called with a club flush draw that didn’t hit and I take it down.

Yeah baby!

Awesome! Any notables hands you recall?

Really 2 big hands. Buy in was 500 minimum, most stacks were in the 5K range, I bought in for 1000. Every hand had 10 straddle too. Pots get big quick.

I think for the first big hand the guy was just trying to bully me out but probably had draws or a set. I had Ad Kc Qs Jd. One raiser, so 4 players in at 35 each preflop. Flop comes Td 9c 4c. Check, Pot, Fold and to me. I call, first player folds. Turn is 8h. With the nuts, I know I am sweating clubs and a potential boat if the board pairs. He pots, I shove, and river is a brick 3h. Stack a little over 2200.

The other big hand was Ad Qd Ac Ts and the bet was potted twice before it got to me, then was potted again by me. I got one caller. The flop was Td 9h 7d and was immediately shoved by the caller. I think I could be behind to a straight, but am pot committed. He flips over Th Tc 9d 6d. Having a ten blocked, I didn’t expect top set. Turn As, river 7h. Another player mentioned that he had Ah.

Boom. I love PLO. Such amazing opportunity there. But big swings. I have a great book that really solidified my PLO game. PLO by Jeff Hwang.
