Photographic/short term memory

And a curse, I’m sure . . .

Another weird part that we were just talking about though: I SUCK at remembering people’s names.

If I could trade the ability to recall worthless streams of numbers for the ability to better recall names, I would!!

One of the reasons I hate meeting new people. It is very unlikely I will remember their name the first 2-5 times I hear it.

Names also instantly vaporize for me within a few seconds.

If I’m the second person to say a name when being introduced to someone, there is about a 90%+ chance I will have already forgotten the other persons name. If I’m first, the odds only increase to about 50% and unless their name is said by someone else, it will be gone within a minute anyway.

Names only stick for me if I hear them 4-5 distinct times over the course of a month or so. It doesn’t matter how many times I hear them at each interaction it seems.

In my freshman dorm, a few guys would leave the door open for whoever is walking by. I would sometimes stop by and watch a game or chat.

Around 6 months in one guy picked up in the fact that I didn’t remember his name. I’m pretty good at hiding it normally, but he was insightful and picked up on the absence. He shouted. “How could you not know my name?! We’ve known each other for months!!! It’s right there on the door!!!”

Well, whoever that guy was, he was pretty angry.

Same. I’ve gotten better, nowadays when I meet someone I make myself say their name about ten times over the next few days, and it’s actually working.

Regarding numbers, I used to be great at it. Not ‘photographic memory’ great but pretty darn good. That skill has left the building.

It’s been an issue particularly on the AO. I have never been good at keeping names and varying screen names straight. I can’t remember beefs and squabbles between posters or even who is who and that has really made folks mad at me over the years :grimacing:

Thankfully mods have better memories!

At meetups in years past, most people went by screen names. I had real names on my phone but don’t recall them. @Mathman when I stopped by your house recently, I asked the guy outside “are you Mathman?” “uhhhh nooo”
