Do I like the song? If no, remove from consideration Are any songs left that are new to me? If yes, select the best* song from this bucket
If no, then select the best* song from those I already knew
*best is subjective. When the criteria is something like “female singer” it is just a checkbox and then I choose the one I like the most. When the criteria is something like “funny” or “makes me happy” I choose the one that I deem “funniest” or I feel made me the “happiest”.
There are two songs new to me that I like. There are two songs that I know but haven’t heard in years that I like. I’m having trouble deciding between those 4. But then there are maybe one or two well known songs that I’ve certainly heard recently but also fit the category very well, and I’m contemplating giving them my vote too.
Not a great voter turnout, we’ll have to do better next time.
Walk the Moon with the walkover. Big victory. I considered it. I like to brag that the first time I heard the song on the radio on some alternative rock station I told my then girlfriend “this song is gonna be huge”.
I had voted for Ida Maria, but then changed my vote. If I had more time I may have changed back. Ida Maria has this quality mid-late-00’s sound that was very familiar even though I hadn’t heard the song before. I liked it a lot. Also liked the Humpty Dance as my other song I hadn’t heard before.
Weezer was a good one, and I hadn’t heard that song in a long time. I have a lot of Weezer in my general rotation but this song is not in it. I considered it though.
The Aquabats is a fun one, and this song I hadn’t heard in years. They are a band that I never got into but saw them in concert once and listened to a lot of their stuff beforehand, this song included. In the end they got my vote.
Same. “Walking on Sunshine” may be the very happiest song ever recorded. But since I’m trying to stick to voting for “new to me” songs, you got my vote with the more subdued Cowboy Junkies.
This song makes me immediately crank the dial when it comes on the radio, I have excellent memories with all of my cousins (ok, not all, but the dozen in my age range) rapping this song for our family reunion talent show (I think I was 12). I didn’t expect to get any votes, but it was the very first song that I thought of, in terms of “makes me happy”.
Round 2: Submit a song in which the lyrics do not match the beat
The general advice on this is to submit a song that sounds happy but the lyrics are sad, or a song that sounds sad but the lyrics are happy. There are obviously more ways to work with this category but essentially submit something where the meaning of the lyrics are unintuitive based on how they and/or the music sound.
I had only listened to half the songs, and didn’t realize when the voting deadline was. Was planning to vote for Shut and Dance, so guess it didn’t matter. I just generally don’t have enough time.
Can’t believe Ida Maria didn’t do better. Impossible not to love that song.
