Need advice on new dishwasher

Is it a Fisher & Paykel?

The exact Maytag model I paid 580 for in Feb 2022 is now 880 list price.

I checked in it. It is 50db quiet, has “power blast” and “dual power filtration” but takes 2:04 to run (there’s a countdown timer) for a no heat dry option. Heated dry takes 40 or 50 minutes more, and there’s no quick wash option.

Mine is a KitchenAid, with just one compartment.

A little googling and I see that the likely culprit is a faulty fill valve. Depending on the model number, the replacement part is about $30 from online retailers. (Amazon is one, but repairclinic.com is a source I have used several times with great success). Just search on your exact model number and “fill valve”

For me, $30 is cheap enough to give it a shot on my own.

I would expect to pay $300 for a service call, so 90% discount for a DIY attempt is worth the gamble for me.

Yes

How is it? Our… GE maybe… is actually a good machine, but when it dies that was on my list. Does it work well? Quiet enough?

Yes, it works well. Reasonably quiet. It’s probably in the range of 15 years old, so not sure how it compares to newer comparable models.

The not enough water could also just be clogged holes on that spinny arm things. If they’re clogged enough to not let much water though, the arms won’t spin and you might see undissolved detergent then. That’s easy to fix, too. The arms can be removed and you can use a pin or small paperclip to clean scale from the holes. But an even easier fix is to try the dishwasher cleaner they sell at the grocery store and put it on the long cycle. $4 fix. Grocery stores by me have a couple brands. This one is common. https://www.amazon.com/Finish-Dual-Action-Dishwasher-Cleaner/dp/B010OVNPEW/ref=asc_df_B010OVNPEW/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=309789297054&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2400976445039440639&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9021556&hvtargid=pla-406645502615&psc=1

Naw, it went from working fine to not working at all overnight. The arms have dozens of holes, and they didn’t all clog at once.

Also, it suspiciously failed right after i ran descaling solution through it, so i wonder more if something dissolved/rusted then if a lot of stuff is clogged.

We have the model linked below. I had never heard of this brand till we moved into our house, but my goodness does it clean dishes. Nearly everything always comes out super clean. It’s also pretty quiet. Runtime is about 2 hours. I am not endorsing this seller, but this is a Swedish brand so not stocked everywhere.

I had that brand in one of my homes and thought it did a fine job. I’d never heard of it either, but the real estate listing when we bought the place included “Asko dishwasher” as if that was such a plus that it merited mention in the write up.

Kind of like a car, it isn’t just the time it’s the miles so to speak. How long a dishwasher lasts depends on how often you use it. A family of 6 that runs the dishwasher a couple of times a day will wear one out faster than a couple that does a lot of eating out.

Well that’s interesting. You might not need to replace the float switch, just jiggle the float up and down several times - a piece of descaled something might be lodged in it.

Although, now that you’ve mentioned it, i did fix it once, a couple of years ago, by using a paperclip to open up all the little holes in the blades.

Our previous dishwasher lasted about 15 years and was branded as Kenmore but was really a Bosch. When it died, it would fill with water but wouldn’t spray it around. The pump had died and unfortunately that pump was only used in two production years. Would have cost $450 for the pump alone, no labor. It cost me $150 service charge to find that out. No brainer to replace it. We ended up getting a new Bosch, basically the quietest one they sell at home depot. It cleans great and is super quiet. If I don’t have my hearing aids in, I can’t hear it running at all unless I put my ear right on the machine. Even with them in, it is hard to hear from just 10 or 15 feet away. I think it was around $800 and I ordered it online with free shipping. My dad and I did the installation which was more complicated then necessary because we installed a new outlet for it rather then have it hard wired.

I have an outlet, so the electrical part of the installation is easy. I’m not comfortable doing plumbing, though.

If you can do it with all Sharkbite pieces plumbing is easy these days.

The plumbing was super easy with my sink setup. The water line just screws on and the discharge is a simple clamp. I could have reused both lines from my old washer but the new one came with new lines so I replaced those. It is almost exactly like hooking up a clothes washer. The first time we replaced the dishwasher was way worse as the water line was copper pipe and the joints had been sweated into place. We cut those off, sweated new connections into place, and then we were off to the races. A little more time up front but knew that a future replacement was going to be much easier. That one I couldn’t have done by myself.

My BIL has a Bosch. Does a very good job, but cycle is 2 hours 25 minutes normal, over 3 hours if “Sanitize”, which the rarely use.
