My orange tabby has been on special food and a daily pill for most of his life. He’s over 12 now and it’s never been an issue.
Suddenly he’s decided he doesn’t like his food anymore and he doesn’t want to take his pill. We ordered some different varieties of his special diet, which helped a little but he’s still usually not eating his usual amount. In the past when he rarely wouldn’t take his pill, it was no problem for me to pop it in his throat quickly. Not anymore. He clawed the crap out of me when I tried that a couple of times recently. It’s now a 2 person job: wife puts on heavy leather gloves and holds him, I pop the pill in his throat.
We asked the vet about taking him off the special diet, and they advised against it. However, they also advised for him not to get stressed about things, and I’m sure the current pill regimen is stressful for him.
Had same issue with our cat (pill form made him aboslutely crazy when we tried to give it to him) but we were able to source a transdermal cream (with same ingredient as pill just more expensive) from the US which he tolerated.
He’s doing better, but still occasionally refusing his pill or not wanting his food. It’s a PITA.
Another thing he’s done a few times in the past few months: projectile vomiting. All cats seem to barf occasionally. Our other cat is a fairly frequent offender. That’s not what I’m talking about here. This is the cat running while looking like something from the exorcist. Big mess. I’ve only witnessed it once, amd my wife witnessed it another time. I woke up to find the after effects yesterday. I think this is the 4th time it’s happened in the last 6 months. Not sure if it is related to the fussiness about food.
It does look like we can get a transdermal version of his daily meds, so hopefully that reduces one problem going forward.
