Mass Graves at Canadian Residential Schools

No, they aren’t forced to stay there. But there are housing and healthcare benefits for those on reservations that natives may not be eligible for if they move off reservation land. When I say set them free, I don’t mean tear down the barbed wire fences surrounding the reservations. I mean set them free of the government created chains and shacks binding them to reservations. Perhaps section 8 housing vouchers can be expanded for those moving off reservations and Medicaid can expanded for the same population. Obviously not a perfect solution, but this would at least reduce the need of Indian Affairs.

Whoever removed the grave markers should be locked up

If they ever had grave markers…

But I don’t agree with that. Maybe there were wooden markers that rotted away. Maybe other kids at the school removed them to as a minor act of vengeance. Who knows.

But whoever failed to tell the parents should be locked up. And whoever has records now and isn’t handing them over should be locked up.

I don’t need that laid on me. This is neither my fault, nor my responsibility. And it’s incessant where I am. Every bit of media I read everyday is on this AND I’m already doing far more reading into this than most other Canadians including the activists.

Your fault? No. Your responsibility to help fix it? It 100% is. It is your government that did this.

Everything is fine. We can start worrying about Uighur now.

The Catholic religious order that operated residential schools in Saskatchewan and British Columbia where hundreds of unmarked graves have been found says it will disclose all historical documents in its possession.

The Missionary of Oblates of Mary Immaculate operated 48 schools, including the Marieval Indian Residential School in the Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan and the Kamloops Indian Residential School in B.C.

On Thursday, the Cowessess First Nation announced the preliminary discovery of 751 unmarked graves at the former Marieval Indian Residential School.

CBC News

I bet pretty soon we will start hearing that “China is sowing discord” by amplifying residential school deaths news. With a fall election looming, voters need to feel aggravated about something and someone.

I think we got lots of 'splainin to do on our side :us: as well (in general) then

I have a wsj subscrption so I was able to read the linked article that OP posted. I will copy and paste a portion of the article I referenced.

From the WSJ; "Chief Delorme said children who died while attending the Marieval school were buried at the site and their graves may have been marked in the past. However, he said headstones were later removed by representatives from the Catholic Church, which ran the school for many years…

Most of the graves are spaced evenly apart, he said, and each one is now marked by a small flag."

Absolutely deplorable! I suppose this is better than finding out these were execution style “reeducation schools” where kids were killed and dumped into mass graves.

Oh, we certainly do.

Hmmm, I thought I was able to share a limited amount of articles on social media with links that anyone could read. Maybe I did it wrong…

Are you responsible for fixing everything the US government is doing? I could probably rhyme off a few problems. Or just the ones that you choose to?

I’m already far more invested in this than most other Canadians by putting effort into educating myself beyond reading facebook. It doesn’t need to take over my life.

And if there’s going to be a poltical cause I’m going to champion publicly, it’d be local homophobia. Not truth and reconciliation, which should be in the lap of the federal government primarily.

Yes, Americans are responsible for working to hold their government to account for all the injustice the government creates. It’s part of living in a democracy — if the government is accountable to the people, the people are accountable for what the government does.

Huh? Because something terrible happened in the past we should ignore something terrible happening now?

I knew that Australia did this with mixed (Aborigine/white) children, but I didn’t realize that we’d kidnapped our own indigenous children.

I presume that by 1996 the schools were not kidnapping and murdering children?

I think they weren’t out-and-out murdering the kids. They were beating them, sexually abusing them, encouraging them to abuse each other, underfeeding them, over-crowding them (TB was a thing) and generally creating conditions in which an awful lot of them died, and the rest were damaged.

@spacelobster, I’m not sure what you are being asked to do, other than be a responsible citizen and try to remedy as much as can be remedied. I think you CAN take a break from this if you want to. Just return when you have the energy to try to make things better.

And yes, the US has many many problems of its own. And no one can fight every fight.

No one is forced to stay on a reservation, with the possible exception of someone committing a crime on a reservation and serving time… im not exactly clear on how that works.

Reservations are typically very poor, although ones that have casinos are less so.

One of the benefits of living on a reservation is free healthcare from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. But people are free to move off reservations and sign up for Medicaid. And I believe that if they maintain their affiliation with the tribe they are still eligible for free healthcare on the reservation. I don’t think there is a residency requirement, although I’m admittedly not positive.

No, no, the leader in 10 years should just apologized maybe after they extract the oil and once that area is industrialized.

Canadian politicians/businesses are the biggest hypocrites. For example when the oil companies were poisoning natives downstream in Fort Mac, they claimed that before oil companies, downstream natives were already poisoned. What Canadian mining companies doing around the world, yep really environmentally friendly.
