Went to see The Plowboys as my Canada Day outing. The founder is a 74 year old buddy from my childhood who grew up on a neighbouring farm so I have known him my whole life. In the photo below he is the guy on our right with the bass. His son (in purple) is the lead singer in the band but my old buddy sings as well. All the band members are superb musicians.
Told him he was the consolation prize for me not getting to see Neil Young this month. We had similar musical tastes in our youth but he found there was not much of a market for his rock band sound in rural Ontario so he switched to C&W.
Loved his band uniform so may try to get a costume like that. He still farms as well so the band is just a part time gig: fun activity in retirement as they were clearly enjoying themselves.
He told a funny story about O Brother Where Art Thou.
Told his then-wife he had a voice-over gig.
She said, what is it?
I will do the singing, and it will come out of George Clooneyâs mouth
Oh, thatâs my fantasy, she said.
Another funny story about a collab he almost turned down. Didnât know what EDM was, but listened to the song and liked it. Checked with his 19yo daughter who thought he was punking her about Aviicii.
A favorite band of mine (Umphreyâs McGee) is doing a 3 night run of live in-studio recording sessions with fans present. Interesting concept and something unique that Iâve not heard of many bands doing before. Looking forward to seeing how the metaphorical sausage is made (though to be fair, their bread-and-butter is more in the live touring realm).
one of my favorite bands is playing a dual set 12/30 & 31. Opening set is their tribute band alterego Deervana, playing the nirvana unplugged LP. Then their regular Deer Tick set. I am going the 30th but have tickets for both - if you are near providence and want the NYE tix LMK
Thanks. Sadly I wonât be near any of their tour locations but hopefully they will return. Iâll look for some recordings. I love music from this era (medieval/renaissance).
This was stop 6 of 11 this tour of NA, the rest sounded east of here. But they said they would return, so hereâs hoping. I bought some cds to encourage them.
Speaking of band crushes, Iâm contemplating going to see MJ Lenderman here in Lawrence. In part because he collaborates with Katie Crutchfield (of Waxahatchee). She lives about 25 miles from the venue so I figure decent chance she will be in attendance and I can see about a selfie with her.
